Hi,

I am hoping someone can help me as i have no idea, my foal doesnt come home until september but i have so excited i am planning already. He will be six months old when he comes home and is a welsh d. I had seen dodson and horell do a foal mix however this seems to be gold dust to get hold of my local stores don't stock it and i haven't managed to find it on the internet either other than the odd bag on ebay. there is also a native sure grow however from reading it up it seems as though this is for 1 year plus... but i am happy to be corrected. So my question is what do i feed from 6 months plus - he will have adlib haylage/hay, a mineral lick, day turnout through the winter and in on a night. I am aware of OCD and the consequences of over feeding and really want to get it right so any regimes/ opinions greatly appreciated.

You need to be careful not to give high starch feed as it can encourage the OCD type things - my weanling got top spec's stud balancer and micronised linseed when he needed extra calories - the balancer gives all the protein, vits and minerals in the right proportions for youngsters and the linseed is all oil based so no risk to joints :-) Milo started on the balancer at about 1 month old as was eating out of his mom's bowl (I had to stop him before that as was causing him to scour) but it's suitable from 1 month so set up for weanlings etc
