Im used to feeding a rather lazy, skinny mini Tb, so im having difficulty deciding what to feed the mare  Atm shes on haylage, 2kg Working horse and pony cubes and 1.5 round scoops of showshine chaff. She is naturely forward going and could go for hours if you wanted!! Shes only 4 so is doing 20-30mins flatwork 2 days a week, hacked for 1-2hrs once, lunged for 10mins once a week and jumped once a week for 30 mins. Im leaning towards the balancer route or a supplement with some chaff, but there is soooo many i cant decide which is best. What does everyone else use, and which works best?

Thanks in advance :D

My TB good doer 4 yr old is on: 24/7 good grazing, 2 mugs of high fibre nuts, splash of sugar beet water or just water, a mug of baileys outshine. fed twice daily.

Works for mine.

Wow, that is alot of hard food if she is a good doer! I feed mine either fast fibre (which they totally love and also has all vits and mins in) or just a molasses free chaff (topspec top chop lite) with a supp powder - we use pink powder. Of the two I think the fast fibre was the best as it soaks in just 5 mins and no faffing with anything else, bowls licked clean too! Didn't give them the sillys either as it is low in sugar and starch and contains no cerals. Really fab stuff! Ours had a stubbs scoop each once a day.

Mine is a forward going good doer - and like the other comp horses on our yard, gets only haylege net 2x a day, few hours turnout, scoop grass nuts, scoop fibre chaff and 2x scoops sugar beet, plus glucosamine supplement and all-round joint supplement.

I was expecting her to be HUGE when you said 2kg of hard feed!

But the pics don't actually look too bad.

What grazing does she have? Your plan of forage (grazing if at all possible or hay/hayledge) and balancer(s) sounds good.

Lol not huge just slightly overweight :p I would idealy like her to lose a couple of pounds as you have to apply a bit of pressure to feel her ribs :o Atm we dont have much grazing. We just moved yards and were only allowed to use a little field for a couple of hours a day. It only has a small amount of grass in it so were still feeding breaky, lunch and dinner haylage which iv cut down.

My 7/8th TB is now having 500g a day of spillers balancer. Ideal for vitamins etc. - she was on 12kg haylage and 4kg a day of hard feed over the winter, but now gone onto summer grazing and is getting enough forage off the grass so no haylage at all - no need for hard feed - we are competing once a week at dressage and schooling hard 5 days a week and hacking once a week- some days works twice a day being lunged in am and ridden in evening, so i would go forage and balancer route - spillers do a lite version

My good-doer gets a haylage net at night and is at grass in the field all day. She gets no hard feed but could still do with losing a couple of pounds despite being exercised daily! I think I'm blessed as my last horse looked anoerexic despite troughing through bucket-loads of feed!xx

Mine has been on ad lib forage and 2 feeds of chaff, performance balancer and outshine a day.

He's got rubbish feet though, so have substituted Formula 4 Feet for the balancer and stopped the outshine as I don't think he needs the energy. He's out at night on OKish grass and in with ad lib haylage during the day. (I'm a sucker for a shiny coat though, so if he's not shiny in a few months time I'll restart the outshine - shallow? Me? Never.....)

My cob went really well last year on Baileys lo-cal, chaff, oil and salt. He did a couple of 32km rides (at trot and canter), jumping twice a week inc sj competitions and xc schooling and hacking most days for up to 4 hours.

He looked shiny, had great feet (farrier recommended taking shoes off as feet were in such great condition) and felt well in himself. Had I needed any more 'oomph' I would have added some sugar beet, but never felt I needed to.

He's coming back from being on loan next month and will go back on this feed, although might try the spillers light balancer as heard good things about it and it's slightly cheaper than the baileys.

My forward going good-doer is on...

1 x handful happy hoof
1/2 x handful cool mix

and that is it. She's been on it all winter with 2009 hay, and is not out at night and in for a few hours during the day with a slice of hay.

My good doer is on 1 1/2 mugs of baileys lo cal balancer and a tiny handful of chaff to mix in her 25ml of oestress.

If she didn't need the oestress she would be on balancer - that is all.

I find "cool mixes" can be like rocket fuel for some horses and some chaffs that are designed to be fed on their own (ie hoofkind) can often have lots more energy than normal chaff.

Only_me I feel your pain :p My last boy was the same, cost a flippin lot to feed lol
DG and MB was thinking of Lo-Cal but dont know anyone that feeds it so thanks for that info :) Not a fan of spillers though lol Could try that then if i need more oomph add some Equi Jewel hmmmm just need to find a baileys stockist now!!

They stock Baileys in portadown, if you go into town and head towards the police station, turn in as though going to police station and follow road to left, last building on left and they have EVERYTHING that baileys have! :D
