Hi,

can anybody reccommend what to feed a 15.2 lightweight cob prone to getting a big belly?

Currently turned out in the day, in at night with small hole haynet of haylage, only half full.
Has 2 hard feeds of a handful of alfa-a and a cup of blue chip dynamic for joints.

Would some sort of low cal or veteran mox be better? He is 16.
Thanks x

I'd say swap your alfa a for hi-fi lite and just add a joint supplement like Gold Label Glucosamine Plus or Equine americas equivalent for his joints and if you want to make sure he gets vits and mins, a general purpose supplement like equivite then you can drop the blue chip too.

swapping your haylage for soaked hay would be preferable too but see how he goes on the above any you might not have to.

My Welsh cob is feed ad lib hay, which has been soaked for 12 hours.

He gets 2 hard feeds a day which consist of 2 handfuls of Hi-Fi Good Doer, a scoop of Top Spec Anti Lami, seaweed, a splash of oil and sometimes some carrots.

He has been in for 5/6 months, the result of injury & operation so I will have to closely monitor his weight now that he is being turned out again.

Hi

I'd suggest swapping the haylage for soaked hay or at least high fibre haylage.

Swap the alfa-a for chaff or hi-fi lite and replace the BC with a lo cal balancer and feed it only every third day.
This is what I do for my 14hh good doer. I had a good chat with the Baileys Nutritionist about her.

I've fed my last two cobs on baileys lo-cal balancer and they've both done really well on it. Usually feed it with a couple of handfuls of hifi.

Our good doer gets Bailey's Lo-Cal, HifiLite and is on a very un-grassy paddock. He gets a hoof supplement (his hooves haven't been growing much) and Supaflex as supplement. He lives on fresh air really.

I feed a handful of happy hoof, spillers horse & pony nuts and red cell. I have also just started her on NAF Slimline which is meant to make up teh shortfall of vits & mins for those on restricted diets and boosts the metabolism. She has her hay inside doubled up nets to make it last longer and digest better as she will gorge. I have had to restrict her grazing to get the weight off too.
I would agree with swapping the haylage for hay, makes a big difference.

I feed my 16.1 two section of hay soaked all day at night he on poor grazing all day two feeds handfull of safe and sound morning and night plus vit and mins still to fat cant feed baileys lo cal as it blows his brain out

My good doer will be getting (at most)

Grazing by day
Two haynets of hay a night

Feed:
One handful of chaff, a spoonful of PP and some joint supplement.

I would swap the

Alfa A which has a Digestible Energy of 10 to the Good doer which has a DE of 7

Hayledge for soaked hay

Blue chip dynamic I imagine has a high DE and is not marketed as a low calerie food - I would swap this for a combined powdered joint supplement. If feeding the RDA of good doer you may not need a vitamin supplement.

My very good doer pony living out on poor grazing only has good doer and a supplement and still thrives.
