Hello,

Was just wondering if anyone has a horse who has/does tie up, and if so how do you manage the condition.

Eg, dietary changes, excercise, feed rations etc?

Never had first hand experience of it.

xx

Thank you, will do that now

The important thing is to keep starch levels to a minimum and feed a diet high in fibre and oil.

Feedwise keep well clear of cereals, luckily these days there are lots of products on the market that will help give him energy/weight.

Oil products include Triple Crown Triple Top Up, Baileys Outshine or Copra Meal. Speedibeet is also good and any Alfalfa chop if he needs energy, look for a lower value unmollassed chop if he doesn't.

Thank you Sirena!

What about any supplements/balancers/magical mystery additions to feed that can help to prevent it?

Anything for helping the muscles etc?

Too much caffeine = too many questions!

go for a Winergy feed! I use them for my 2 and they were really helpful. low starch high fibre high oil depending on which one you go for give them a call

My sisters mare has had problems with azoteria for 10 yrs.
She has mineral deficiencies in calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium. So has to be suplimented daily to prevent a relapse.
She had Pat Harris, the top azoteria vet, sort her diet.
Shes on 1/2 scoop of Alfa A twice a day (min, can go up as needed for energy)
Limestone flour and Salt - for her deficiency
And she has a suppliment from Roger Hatch at Trinity Consultants, I cant remember its name, but she's not tied up badly since she's been on it.

Shes never fed any concentrates, If she needs more energy, we use Simple Systems feeds, as there all grass / alfa based

She has to be kept warm, and cant get wet (even in summer), as if her skin gets wet / cold, she soon mildly ties up, but rugging well for a couple of days has her right again

And when exercising, dont change anything suddenly. Gradually increase the workload overtime
