Does anyone have any feed suggestions for a TB event horse to substitute his mix?

When we bought him he was on 6 scoops of pasture mix a day split between 3 feeds

we have cut that down eventually to one heaped scoop in each feed, he also has hifi & alfa a and outshine which he is fine on. But he has been very lively jumping lately which I though was due to lack of runs, he has got better after his runs, but was still just a little bit too keen last night!

I think maybe he was a bit depressed were he was before as he wasnt perky or bright at all like he is now! He also gets about 4 more hrs a day turnout with other horses on good grass.

Mum has now cut the feed down to half a scoop of mix in each feed (pasture mix) for now, but is there anything else we could use as a bulk that isnt fizzy?

I had mine on Ride and Relax and a probiotic called Equine Gold, mixed with plain chaff, it worked wonders with him, kept the weight on and he calmed down, gave him speedibeet in the winter to bulk it out

Have you thought of Spillers Slow Release Cubes???

Or Redmills Horse Care Cubes??

I did think about cubes, but he has always been fed mix.

I just found Baileys non oat horse & pony mix, that might be a possibility....

i feed my 4 year ex racehorse on high fire cubes i only got him in Dec and thought best to feed him on little untill i got used to him and he was fine on these, however i have slowly put him on D & H pasture mix and so far so good!!!!

I find with the pasture mix that sometimes it can be a bit like feeding a horse rocket fuel. (my mare was on it for the winter, but since the grass has come through its a no go

) I found that I needed the pasture mix for the winter but now she is just on some Topline conditioning cubes and Alfa A to get a bit of condition back after winter. She went rather keen after she went out on good grass with the pasture mix!

Feed my TB mare Calm and Condition from Allen and Page. Its low in sugar so supposed to take the edge off of them but keeps weight and condition on. Its really good stuff and she looks the best she ever has. She doesnt have the biggest appetite but eats this and stillhas more than enough energy to event and she's definitely a calmer horse (until she sees a xc start box!)

I'm with Izzi pasture mix = rocket fuel, the name is completely misleading.
Also I cannot feed my TB alfa a, sends him mad. I'd get him off the pasture mix and alfa a onto hifi with some mix. Personally I feed my TB on hi fi and spillers conditioning cubes and he's not at all fizzy.

I feed mine chaff and hi fibre nuts. I like to keep things simple. Feeding complicated food usually gives you a complicated horse.

I see you are using outshine - something we use for TB yearling sales prep. Great stuff - but fires them up!!! Are you sure you need it?

If I was you, I'd go back to basics

It's a lot cheaper too!!

Yes he def needs the outshine and looks great on it.

He looses weight very very easily, think I will try the non oat mix and maybe cut out the alfa a

cubes are exactly the same as a mix.. no difference.

Youll probably find that its more to do with fitness than feeding...

You know yorself if you loose some wieght and get a bit fitter you feel more livly,,

Feeding wise? you cant really get any less energy ina concerntrate than that in a pasture mix.. You could try the calm which is good for condition and made ted as lazy as a 30 yr old shire (Not what i bloody want)

To be honest.... its more likly to be that he needs more work than feed though.

I'd go with nikkiportia, stick to Hifi and Fibre Nuggets (Badminton do big chunky Complete fibre nuggets in a pinkish bag) and if he/she is a fussy eater - I have never known a horse refuse to eat them. Remember - Horse get nrg from Fibre - it just a slow release of nrg compared to a mix. Nuggets also have got digestive aid in them. If he/she doesnt have enough nrg or condition try triple Crown top up (start with 1/2 mug a day), or just use veg/sunflower oil to keep his coat nice. I have had rocket fuel experience with Alfa A and AA Oil, not so much with Pasture mix tho'
Good luck!!

He definitely doesnt need more work! he is ridden every day, apart from a day off after an event but sometimes he will walk.

He schools hard twice a week, one a lesson. He has a jump lesson once a week. competes or does long hacks at the weekends. And I always hack for about half an hour b4 I school. He is very fit!!

The energy value of a cube is always lower than its equivalent mix because of the cooking process it has gone through.
And to be honest, more work = fitter horse = more problems!

One of my TB's is a nutter on pasture mix and one is fine on it....I also have to say that I don't find pasture mix is good at keeping on weight/condition.

If he's ok on oils then I'd give showmix a go as Ty was great on that - if yours is doing alot more work then he may well need a scoop twice a day.

Can I ask why you're feeding alfaa and hifi? Try alfabeet aswell - my mate has converted me onto this and my boys love it - very high fibre and bulking but not fizz.

Good luck - getting a TB's feed right is always fun!! x

Thank you for your advice, but I couldnt work him any more then I do! And he isnt uncontrolable just think now he is happier and feelingw well I think it might be wise to cut out some mix or replace it with something with less energy

My 2 year old TB x has 2 scoops alfa-a, 1 scoop of pony nuts and 1 scoop of build up mix. I am slowly taking him of the build up mix as he is only still having it as the grass is late coming through in the fields so it isn't filling him up and he was losing weight. Probably will just give him a scoop of alfa-a and pony nuts and carrots when grass comes through.
