Feeding a mw cob?

Hi there

Posting this c/o my friend who is in the process of purchasing a lovely 14.2hh mw cob. He has wintered out but been hunting and worked a lot over the winter. He is a good weight at the mo but, lacks sparkle and condition. Need him to show, but also need to watch for laminitis.
What feed advice would you give going into the spring for him - he should be arriving at the end of the month, and will be on short, sand based grass.
He will do a lot of showing this summer, and hunter trials etc. Will give D&H a call as their advice line has always been helpful but wondered what you as owners think would be a good idea? Many Thanks in advance.

Um, Baileys No 4 always did my cob well without making him silly, also Alfabeet has been very popular this winter in the shop, gives condition without fizz. Topspec feeds are worth looking at too, they seem to make a big difference quickly, and we also sell a lot of the Baileys lo cal balancer (no 14) to feed to good doer types.

I have a 14 2 welsh cob and she is a good weight on large scoop of dengie healthy hooves ( this has mix already added and is a complete feed with added biotin)and handfull of baileys economy nuts twice a day.She currently weighs in at 360 to 370 and has a lovely shape is full of sparkle and really forward going.We have short sand based grass too.

I would go for nothing more than hay/haylage and/or grazing at this time of the year with either a mineralised salt lick, or if she feels she has to give him something a feedbalancer (Blue chip or similar) or complete suplement with a handfull of plain chaff.

If, come winter, he loses weight or starts to compete hard then just a little sufar beet and chaff, or fibre beet. Its much easier to put weight on than take it off with a cob!

My cob is a spoilt brat but he get's safe and sound chaff by d&h and 1/2 scoop of pasture mix + a cup of stud balancer and loads of supplements, I swear by the balancer!!

I have a cob who sounds similar size/weight

she is on 1/2 hi-fi lite (next to know calories!)
and then 1/4-1/2 mix (used to be cool mix, now just economy mix but it seems the same!)

in summer she just gets 1/2 scoop of hi-fi with her supplements as the extra mix just adds weight!

i add a vit/min/general supplement as obv she isnt fed much, adn the linseed/garlic/parsley oil for skin and coat condition
