Feeding a new horse

just bought a new horse, who apparently 'lives on air' - though I'm sure he needs more than that! ;-) He is currently given ad lib hay and not much else, hacked out a few times a week, and is quite tubby. I want to get him hacking out a lot and eventually riding long distance - so for now, what to feed? He arrives on Saturday (v excited!)

Nothing!!! Hay and grass will be plenty, especially if he is tubby. Once you have had him, say a month, if you find he does not have the energy you want THEN start to think about feedling. Lots of horses do indeed survive on nothing but forage!

Yes, should be fine without hard feed. But a few weeks down the line, once his workload is increasing you might want to add some plain chaff and a multivitamin/mineral supp to make sure he is getting all the vits and minerals he needs. In the future if you start endurance work obviously his energy output and hence feed requirements will change totally from current situation.

agree with the others - when ready to feed i started my tubby on baileys low cal balencer - can recomend that x
