I know this thread will whoosh! right off the bottom of the page asap but if anyone could suggest what they feed their big rangy event types?
I have 2 totally chalk and cheese horses to feed in the summer months and to be truthful, as I guess everyone understands- money matters! The mare can survive on Alfa A Oil and a feed balancer (Formula 4 Feet) but my tall dark handsome one needs much more. He frets off condition when stressed so I would rather he carried more than necessary..
Perhaps something to run with the Alfa A Oil? He can cope with mixes and cereals.. currently on Baileys no 6 but isnt really touching him..been on it for 6 months..

My tb tends to drop off at this time of year, when she starts to event and the grass isn't thro properly. (In the summer I would certainly class her as a good doer). At this time of year I seem to be able to make her look less rangey by simply adding in horsehage to her hay rations overnight (she can easily devour upto 30lbs of the stuff overnight).

my TB gets 2 1/2 scoops of winergy equilibrium condition, 2 mugs of charnwood milling linseed, and i scoop (dry weight) of speedibeet, split over 2 feeds, per day.

he gets ad lib haylage too and looks fabulous. hasnt dropped anything over winter.

i drop the linseed to one mug over summer.

pics in siggy are same horse, winter pic on left, summer on right.

The trick with horses like this is to feed them a diet that is very very low sugar and starch- therefore no/little cereals. Getting stressy and worrying weight off is a sign that the digestion is not working well, so feeds full of cereals and starch will not be helping the stituaion. It has to be high fibre, and high oil diet. So look at feeds such as the Pure Feeds range, Winergy feeds, or simple systems. All very cheap as you dont have to feed massive amounts of any of them. Top up with linseed ( either boiled or micronised ) and speedibeet, and make sure they have ad-lib hay/haylage

Have got my stressy, lean TB mare on Allen and Page Calm and Condition (2 scoops per day) alfa A (3 scoops per day) top spec balancer (500g per day but will stop when the bag runs out) cool cubes (1 scoop per day - provided by livery yard) micronised linseed (3 farriers formula cups per day) and veggie oil (about 200ml per day). Split into 3 feeds.

Started the linseed very recently and she's looking a bit more covered than normal so fingers crossed as it's nice and cheap!

Am going to try her on Pink Powder once the TopSpec runs out and also changing the C&C for Allen and Page Power and Performance soon to see if it'll give her some more oomph.

She gets ad lib haylage too.

Don't know if any of this helps. Her top line is looking a but better than it was, and her backside is well muscled but her ribs show if she's a bit dehydrated. Can't wait for the Spring grass to come through

this all makes sense.
He has been on simple systems in the past but he really didnt do very well at all on it? Just picked over it and the volume was too great for him. Im not keen on keeping sugar beet all through the summer as it doesnt keep very well in the heat and the volume I feed it at does take him an age to eat (2x feeds a day, 1 stubbs scoop no. 6 and 1.5 scoops soaked SB)
I dont think my budget could stretch to winergy and i dont think he would eat the conditioning one, it has quite a distinctive smell to it!
I can add in haylege at night, that did use to make a difference to him..

The Allen and Page is very low starch, high oil/fibre, it's barley and molasses free and my mare who's incredibly picky finds it very palatable. Can get samples of it from A&P to try.

They recommend feeding the Calm and Condition (1 scoop) soaked in 2 scoops water (for 5mins) plus 1 scoop chaff so would go well with the alfa a oil

Don't laugh but I know many hunters and pointers that are on Baileys stud cubes simply because they run up light at the end of the season otherwise. They are very good for weight gain or condition and are easily digestible while still giving the umph needed.

My tb (ex racer - picky as anything)was originally on no 6 and didn't really get on with it but he does get on with the saracen version - enduro 100 . He was hard to feed as on conditioning feeds he looked good but was a slug to ride but if he went onto a competition mix he was much sparkier but ran up light like he was racing again. He has been on 2kg(most of the time has gone up to 3kg when we were busy out and about) of this ,1kg of barley and 1kg of alfa a a day through the winter and has looked good and had enough energy . In the summer I just drop the barley . I do know someone that feeds the growth version of winergy to her horse even though he is 13 and he looks really good and acts well on it. This was my ned middle of last summer

thank you all! Ive actually had them both on a stud cube it did work quite nicely! I think I will try him on the C+C and Alfa oil with some haylege added in to his hay, and the tub thumping tank can be on just the alfa oil..
oh please work!!

Can I ask why you feed both top spec and Farrier's Formula? You are doubling up on things there and really don't need the top spec as FF is an alround balancer too :)

my rangy stressy TB is on winergy equilibrium, most of the time I use senior but if he loses any condition then I pop him on condition for a couple of bags, he wolfs it down and he can be the fussiest feeder on the planet i f he doesn't like something. He has just the WE and ad lib haylage and looks amazing. Very simple to feed, no mixing of anything else
