I have a young Gypsy Cob gelding who seems to always have mites! I have had him since September. Vet has been out twice to give him the vaccination that is suppose to get rid and I've also been treating his legs daily. Clipped his feathers, washed with antibacterial and mite shampoo for horses, dried off and sprayed with mite spray, he gets the mud brushed off daily when dry and I pick his feet daily and has seen the farrier a couple of times now to check its not his feet causing him to stomp and itch.. Maybe it's allergies? I was thinking of looking into a supplement that's healthy and natural for horses that could get rid of them. Does anyone have any recommendations? He is currently getting just a handful of dengie molasses free chaff to mix with equimins vit/min powder and has some himilayan salt added (just a pinch as he has access to a block of it in the field 24/7). I have stabled him nightly for a week or so to keep him dry for the nights at least but nothing has seemed to help. Sometimes it seems like he is fine for a few days then he will be itchy and stomping (mostly back legs), no sores that I can see and he is sound. He is up to date with worming. Never owned a hairy feathered cob type horse or pony before so this is my first experience with treating and dealing with mites... Maybe it's something else.. I am having the vet out again next week. Sorry for the long post! ❤️ X

The mites can live in the bedding and keep re infesting your horse. No supplement will get rid of mites I am afraid. http://darkmoor.com.au/resources/feather-mite/

My cob had mites when I bought him a few months ago. I treated him with pour on syringes of liquid Ivermectin supplied by the vet and applied to the back of each leg from the knee joint down. I do not stable him and the mites have not returned so far, nor has my other horse become infested . I have not cut his feathers off or washed him either. He was also wormed with Eqvalan as part of his worming programme and it may have helped keep him free of mites but this is just my guess. The cob also has a tendency to thickened skin at the back of his knees (Mallanders) which I keep under control by rubbing Gold Label Wondergel into the area regularly.
