I feed my 16.3 boy, a fairly stocky TB, stabled overnight and in medium work half a scoop of calm and condition and a scoop of alfa a original plus a couple of supplements. He has this twice a day. I'd say he's about 550kgs. I'm thinking of changing to the Alfa oil from Alfa a, just wondering if I'm feeding enough of the Alfa? Anyone else feed these feeds and how much do you give? He has a large haynet at night also. Thanks

well on the alfa a bag it will prob say that he needs 4 lbs of it a day. i think (but not sure) that a round scoop flattened would be a lbs.sounds like they recomend double what you are using.(2.2 lbs =1 kg sorry, old school.lol)

Horse or Pony Size Guide (hh) Approx Weight Light Work (kg/day) Medium / Hard Work (kg/day)
Small Pony (eg: Shetland, Welsh A) 9–12.2 200 0.5 1.0
Medium Pony (eg: Exmoor, New Forest) 12.2–13.2 300 0.5 1.5
Large Pony (eg: Connemara, Welsh D) 13.2–14.2 400 1.0 2.0

Large Horse (eg: Warmblood) over 16.2 650 1.5 2.5

One scoop = 400g

The suggested feeding levels are intended as a guide only. Always adjust your horse's feed ration to suit his temperament, the environmental conditions, his body condition and work load. If your horse is resting why not try one of the Dengie Hi-Fi products

I've got a 15.2hh TB who weighs (I reckon) about 450kg - he is on a scoop of Alfa A, a scoop of Baileys no 4 and half a scoop of sugar beet twice a day, with ad lib haylage (lives out 24/7)

He is just coming back into work so has 45 mins walk/trot schooling (weekdays) or hacking (weekends) on 6 days of the week

He does need to put on condition, hence all the food, but he is doing so nicely now and already has a fantastic shiny coat

My lad is tb...same height and build...he gets 3-4lbs nuts a day,as it is winter, depends on work....big scoop graze on...scoop sugar beet, equivite supplement, garlic(pure freezedried human stuff)and bluechip dynamic...ad lib haylage...he had settled into the amount of haylage he would eat per night(they all binge but then balance out)!!

as long as he isnt losing or gaining then you are doing just fine

The TB's at the yard get 2 mugs of Leisure Mix and half a scoop of Alfa A twice a day, one is 17.2hh and in light to medium work and the other is 16.1hh and in medium work. Both get as much hay as they can shovel in (ALOT!) and lots of grazing all day.
They look fantastic at the moment, neither need to gain weight, lovely shiny coats.
They will get rations steadily increased throughout the winter, and eventually will be fed on (if the same as last year!) Half scoop of Leisure Mix, Scoop of Alfa A and 1/4 scoop of Sugar Beet.

My TB is fairly scrawy at the moment so is getting the same as them plus two mugfulls of Build Up cubes twice a day, and is putting on condition really well.
My HW gets more feed the the TBs and needs it!

Each horse should be fed as individual - if your horse is maintaining his weight well on this diet and has the correct amount of energy for his work, then he is getting the correct amount of food, regardless of what amounts other people feed!

Is there a particular reason why you want to change his diet - is he starting to lose weight, for example?

You need to actually weigh your feed to find out how much there is per scoop. Generally a round stubbs scoop will only hold 1/2 kilo of chaff type feed so even though you think you're feeding lots you're still at half the recommended amount.

However, I'd personally make sure he's getting as much hay / haylage as he can eat as a base and add the hard feed from there.

if you want to put condition on
adlib hay and give him 2kgs of alpha a oil/day with either a vitamine supplement or the recommended amount of c&c for his size.

You may find that he doesn't need the c&C on that amount of alpha a oil unless he is in hard work.

My boy is in light work and just has aplha a oil with supplement and good quality adlib haylage.

goodluck

I would say... if he looks good, you're feeding the right amount for him. Guidelines are just that, only you really know your horse, if he's a bit underweight - feed more, overweight - feed less, if he looks good then you've got it right!

Bumblelion- I feed my 16.1hh TB almost exactly the same as you do, except i feed Mollichaff Showshine (the cherry one) instead of the Alfa Oil as it's pretty much the same thing and she seems to prefer it, as well as Biotin, and she looks great. If what you're feeding your lad works for him then stick with it regardless of what anyone else reccomends. No-one knows your horse better than you do
