Feeding a yearling

Just got my first youngster (17months)and had him a week. he is a tb and i feel he is a bit skinny. i know they aren't supposed to be rounded and chubby (used to the size of the race yearlings at the stud nearby on weight gain powders) but i don't think that seeing every rib is the best either. he went on to better grass tonight but i want to put a bit more weight on him especially as he will be out for the winter if poss and preferably without a rug or just a light rug if i can. Is suregrow any good or am i better keeping to pasture cubes and simple feeds?

suregrow is fantastic stuff, much better than normal horse and pony cubes which are not formulated with youngstock in mind, feed the suregrow alongside alfa a oil and you can't go too far wrong! both simple natural feeds.

I would wait a good month and wait to see what the better grass does to be honest. My 16 m/o was poor when I got him and all he had was grass, hay and a dengie lick and within a couple of months he was a completely different horse!

I'd feed him Winergy Equilibrium Growth if he was mine. And being a TB, I doubt you'll be able to leave him without a rug in winter unless he's naturally a very hot horse.

A big thumbs up for Winergy equilibrium growth from me - after advice (from here) on what to feed an underweight rescued arab 8 month old, 3 months down the line he is looking fantastic (obviously, mild owner bias aside !) and the high fibre low grain mix suits his temperament perfectly.

Agree with the grass comment from CBFan though - the grass round here at the moment has sent many horses into colic and laminitus.
