My old TB has suffered some serious muscle damage according to his blood results that have just come back, he's on Metacam (which is not helping that much) & has now been prescribed ACP.

The trouble is he's off his food so is it ok to crush & syringe ACP. Also he was a sod to take ACP years ago.

I really should of asked my Vet if i could crush & syringe, but ive been up all night with this horse & the Vet was busy giving me loads of info & my brain is not working as well as it should be with the stress of all this. Horse is in a lot of pain.

Thanks in advance all help gratefully recieved.

the best way to do this is to soak two or three pony nuts and then crush acp and mix them with the nuts, add as much warm water as necessary to make it into a paste. this can then be syringed into the horses mouth. a lot less messy than watery acp, as it tends to just run out the mouth. hope this is sucessfull. x

I always wedge them in an apple cut in half. Depends if your horse likes apples I guess, but would imagine he will find it more appetising than his food and it has a much stronger taste so hopefully he won't notice them!

Thank you both for responding Showdiva thankyou, don't have Pony Nuts but do have Topspec Cool Condition cubes which are very similar.
We are starting with 10 & seeing what happens, can up to 20 a day.

oofadoofa, thats what i would do normally but he struggles eating apples. Plus he has super taste buds & would just spit them out no matter what i hid them in. Have owned him for over 20 years so now what he's like, little sod lol.

cool condition cubes work just as well... i have had to do this with one of mine... good luck and hope the horse improves soon x

Girl at my yard slots one tablet inside the middle of a polo and then just feeds as many polos as she needs to get the required dose in. Mint smell and taste means that she has never had an issue with them being spat out. Might be worth a try.

get the vet to give you sedalin (acp in gel form) syringe as a wormer!! if difficult to worm you could get hold of an ear whilst you stick it in!! then keep his mouth shut so he doesnt spit it out!! for a couple of mins!

Ditto slotting them into the centre of a polo - you can dip them in molasses too if that helps to make them tempting. Or crush up the tablet and mix with some watered down molasses and syringe in. Hope you find an easy way!

Thanks everyone, managed to crush & syringe ok. However has had the opposite reaction we had hoped for one the horse. So wont be using again atm, vets just here again.
