Hi,
I've got a cob type who will be in full, hard 7-day a week work with no turn out and on hayledge over winter. We'll most likely compete at least fortnightly, if not weekly.
He's not a typical good-doer, and the last few winters he's been in low work, but with grass turn out (in at night), ad-lib hayledge and no feed but he's dropped weight.
He's an energetic boy but has been known to get latharic in the colder months- obviously this is due to lack of energy and other necessities in his diet but he hasn't needed it in fairness.
My good friend who is studying animal nutrition has recommended a low sugar but high energy diet- as though he drops weight in winter he will get it back quickly in summer so sugar is a no no incase of lami ect!
Any suggestions on what to give him as I desperately need ro go feed shopping but I'm stummped!

Alfalfa would be a good start, I use the pellets and soak them rather than a chop, plus a supplement or balancer and micronised linseed to add a few more calories, all low sugar and starch but high energy. Some people successfully feed copra but I have never tried it so have no idea how well it works, I just cannot get my head around feeding coconut to horses.
