ok - following on from my post below - hopefully am purchasing the horsey but i think he needs to be built up a lot. Hes basically unfit and is hacked from the field - but as a fairly novice owner i am not sure what i can do to help his shape. He is a bit goose rumped anyway. Hes on one of those small square scoops or conditioning mix (baileys) one alfa oil and half a sugar beet. There is very little grass in his field, i am not sure what access to hay he has. Whats the best thing to do when I buy him? Obviosuly a lot of correct work should build up his top line, but is he thin or not?! his conformation isnt the best but i am not after a superstar by any means. have put some more pics below..he looks sad but is quite loved really!

Are you going to be keeping him out 24/7 when you get him, or is he going to be stabled for part of the day? If he is on poor pasture now, you may find that good grazing and adlib hay when in will be enough for him, with perhaps a balancer or vit/min supplement in some Alfa A. Difficult to tell his condition from those pics - you can see his ribs in one but not in the other!

If you weigh tape him once a week when you get him, then you can see if he is gaining or not and whether you need to increase the hard feed.

i know - sorry rubbish pics, you can see his ribs he looks bony but thats sort of him - hes out 24/7 at the mo so poor grazing and not much hay. i would be keeping him in the same place but would increase to ad lib hay, he seems v hungry when i bring him in! i will also keep my instructor involved..should i use a supplement? his feet are crumbly so could do with a help there too.

I dont think he looks to bad at all as you say he needs building up especially over his quarters but that will come with correct work and time. Are you planning on keeping him at the same place he is at now?? or will you move him to somewhere with access to better grazing??

keep him there for a while, complicated but will need to as per contract. glad he looks ok - just wasnt sure as my other horse is a different shape so wasnt sure if hes ok or not

I would defo put him on a conditioning feed (i use calm and condition) and alfa a oil....with sugar beet....adlib hay...can hay be put in the field? will they be moving into a different field for the summer (if it ever comes)?

my horse also need to build up muscle so heres to some hard work!

Ad-lib hay definatley. A biotin supplement or something like formula for feet or farriers formula. Start off the changes to his feed slowly, you don't want him to get too fat or at worst colic. Try lunging him a few times a week but if he's not fit start off at around 15 mins at a time slowly building up to no more than 30 mins and use properly adjusted side-reins to try and help build up that bum. Good luck and he looks like a nice boy
