Hi all

I know this has been done to death on here, but I guess it's specific to my horse so that's why I'm asking. I would really appreciate some advice from people who've had lots and lots of youngsters. I've read so much stuff and its confusing the hell out of me!

My 18m old cob x x AQHA filly has just had a growth spurt and has started to feel really ribby (beyond what I think she should be). We don't have much grass in the field so we are haying it, but she is lowest in the pecking order so I don't know how much she gets although I think she does get a bit. She is in 3-four times a week overnight and gets hay or haylage or a mix (around a bale of haylage a week). I was feeding her a cup of Yearling Cubes and a cup of Baileys Stud Balancer plus hifi lite every day but this hasn't put weight on her at all. In the last few days after having sleepless nights about her being underfed I then upped the daily hard feed to three cups of SB and one of the Yearling Cubes. I've now read all manner of horror stories about overfeeding with hard feed and to be honest, I've never been a fan of loads of hard feed but she really has dropped weight. My plan, now, is to stick her on two cups of SB and a sprinkling of yearling cubes (I bought these as a recommendation but wish I hadn't to be honest, they now need to be used up), the chaff and maybe some micronised linseed but how much of the linseed do I feed her? The cup is the 225g measurement that you get with Baileys.

My brain is hurting from reading so many different ideas. I know everyone has a different take on things, but the overwhelming thing coming through is NOT to feed the recommended amount of hard feed.

I want to keep it as simple and as cheap but as correct as I possibly can, if that makes sense. I am going to speak to my vet tomorrow to see what he says too but would appreciate advice here from those who know what they are talking about. I had posted previously on here and some of the posts were so knowledgeable, so any experienced advice would be so appreciated.

Thanks so much.

I always gave my youngsters adlib forage but it was easier for me as they were in a peer group (five all the same age) so they all got to eat as much as they wanted. They also got the recommended amount of youngstock balancer for their weight.

Has your youngster been wormed recently?

It has also got a lot colder recently so your youngster may be using more energy to keep warm. The growth spurt has probably knocked her back a bit but she should soon pick up.

I certainly wouldn't want an over-topped youngster, especially as spring is just around the corner.
