Feeding advice

Looking for impartial feeding advice.
I feel that if i contact a particular feed company they only promote their products and i want to be sure im feeding the most appropriate thing.
I recently purchased a new horse that i aim to compete BSJA.
He is a large framed 17hands DWB.
He is curently fed a rather basic diet (chaff, flaked maize, bran and beetpulp) which i dont believe is suitable. He lacks condition both bodily, coat and skin. He has also developed small lumps that i have been advised are protein lumps. He can be nappy and spooky when ridden.
I have had horses all my life but never experienced one that i believe has a feed intolerance of some kind.

Any advice much appreciated

Hiya,
I have found that a combination of Hifi, Badminton HF Complete Fibre Nuggets, and TC Top Up work wonders for keeping good digestion, temperament and condition, fed in the correct limits. Its brilliant. Have had real success with the combination so far. Obviously it will take a while to find the right balance. You can vary the top up before a competition or varying workload.
Good luck

I feed ad lib haylage, shreddi (a chop with sugar beet in it needs no soaking) as a base and then use soya oil, I add succulents and supplements as required and Tiger oats if they are in harder work and need some quick release energy.
If you suspect your horse has an allergy which this sounds like to me I'd slowly reduce all his feed and move over to 100% roughage so his gut can recover and then slowly introduce other things one at a time monitoring his response. I'd also stick to straights rather than a mix/cubes so you can ensure you know exactly what he's getting to try and establish what sets him off.

alfa a oil, bailey's topline cubes and speedibeet, simple, easy barley free diet - barley often a cause of lumps - and non heating as well, i'd do a course of naf pink powder as well!
