I'm after some feeding advice. My old boy is 17.2hh and is really struggling to keep weight on at the moment and I'm wondering if I'm actually feeding him enough and whether I should introduce some oil into his diet and if so what kind?

He's ridden 5-6 times a week 40mins schooling or 1-2hr hack
He's in during day with haynet and out at night on grass but there isn't much in his field.

He's getting 1 scoup baileys no4 and 1 scoup chaff with pink powder and joint supplement in the morning and evening.

So I'm wondering if I am feeding enough (I don't think I actually am as he's struggling to keep weight on) whether I up his feed amount, reduce his work or add some oil to his feed

Any advice much appreciated

if i were you, i would swap the chaff for alpha A oil and give him ad lib hay during the day. i always like some haylage left over so i know he has had as much as he wants. other than that what you are feeding is good

He should be getting approx 15kg total intake of feed a day - that includes all hay and grass as well as hard feed. I would be feeding approix 70% roughage to 30% concentrates - which works out at approx 4.5 kg hard feed/day. Weigh your scoop of feed - the normal "Stubbs" scoop is approx 1 kg (depending on feed type) so he probably needs are bit more help with his weight.

Baileys no 4 is good for getting/maintaining condition so I would keep him on the same food - just more of it!

Chaff has limited nutritional value so something like the alhpa A oil - while expensive - will help too.

Hope this helps :-)

I find that Alpha beet is reasonably cheap and good for keeping weight on and would be cheaper to feed than Alpha A oil. Make sure he has ad lib hay at all times.

it does not sound enough. How much hay in kg is he getting? i would up your mix and swope your chaff to alpha oil that is more conditioning and got more calories in it and this sounds right for what he needs!
