Leah's been fed on bog-standard supermarket brand dog food all her life, and she's only been ill about twice in the ten years I've had her so I don't think her health has suffered from it, but I'm starting to notice her coat losing condition and becoming scurfy, and her teeth aren't as white as they used to be. I know that's probably to be expected in an older dog, but I think maybe it's time to switch her to a feed that will give her more support as she gets old and doddery.
I've considered feeding her raw, but I'm too worried about bones in her throat and salmonella and things (plus my mum wouldn't be too impressed if I filled her freezer with offal), so I've decided to start giving her a better quality complete food, maybe with some cooked meat, oily fish etc. Anyone have any suggestions for a food (preferably not horribly expensive, I have literally no money and mum won't want to shell out loads) that will benefit a 10 year old lurcher (whippet/GSD, at best guess)? Also, if there are any supplements you can recommend for keeping her mobile, I'd be glad to hear of them - I've noticed her getting a bit stiff lately, and if we go for a particularly long walk and she overdoes it she will be really hobbly for the next 12 hours or so. I was giving her cod liver oil, but I was told that this can cause excess growths of bone, so I stopped.
Help me out, knowledgeable AAD people! Leah will thank you when she can run around without me putting her back on the lead for fear of having a crippled dog in the morning!
