I have a 12.2 Welsh Section B mare she has lost condition over the winter and I need to find a feed suitable for her. Had laminitis with previous owners so was kept on restricted grazing and fed safe and sound along with hay. Stabled at night but not ridden (they didnt have rider for her). We have had her since september we keep her out 24/7 and she has ad lib hay. Have noticed over the last few weeks that she has lost a little weight and condition and feel we need to build her up. Because of the laminitis we have to be careful what we give her. Also do not want her to hot up. She is ridden about 4-5 times a week for about 1/2 to 1 hr each time. Any suggestions for feed would be appreciated.

Unless you can see her ribs I wouldn't consider trying to put condtion on just now. grass will be through soon , prob is already in Sothern climes, and you will need a buffer. Horses are designed to lose some weight in the winter time. Don't panic about condition loss. Better thinner than the other with a lami prone pony.

if she is really thin, consider adding a small amount of unmolassed sugar beet to her safe and sound. Take it easy tho.

Hope that helps

^ exactly what Pep12 says, mine always lose weight over winter, but I've just started to let them graze the summer paddock for 20 mins a day to get them used to the richness ( Its actually about an inch long in places )

Thanks for that prob panicking a little so used to having little fat ponies. Have put her on safe and sound and that will be fine for the moment. Thanks again for your suggestions.
