I've recently purchased an almost 3 year old unbroken 15hh thoroughbred cross mare, she lives out all year round and is not on any hard feed currently. She has a great amount of grazing and hay morning and night. My vet recommended a youngster balancer and an experienced friend feels she would benefit from a hard feed, which I agree with. I'm considering starting her on Hi Fi Lite with a youngster balancer to ensure she is getting everything she needs. I would like some advice on what others feed their youngsters on / can recommend please. Thank you in advance!

Congratulations on your new addition ?

First things to consider with feed are what do you want it to achieve?
How is her weight and general health?
Did your friend say if there is a specific reason your mare would benefit from a hard feed?

A youngstock balancer is a good start for growth and development but there are lots to choose from, have you tried ringing a few companies feed lines? They can be quite useful as long as you bear in mind they're not impartial and do a bit of comparison yourself afterwards.
