Hi,
My horse has just had his shoes taken off as he has navicular and now has laminitis. We were getting no where with shoes on so decided this was for the best.
I have read that feeding is really important for barefoot horses so am looking for some advice on what I should be feeding him?
He is a 15hh, 8yo welsh D and weighs about 500kg on the weigh tape. He is out of work at the moment and doesn't go out.
Thanks

Same thing happened to me, we removed the shoes for the navicular and discovered the LGL which had no doubt been a problem for years - poor bugger.

Start with the emergency diet..

Be very careful with feeds and always read the label - even the ones with the laminitis trust stamp on the bag, more often than not they contain molasses or cereal by-products.

As he has some quite serious issues with his feet, I'd cut everything out and start from scratch, adding one thing at a time and making sure he has no adverse reactions to anything he's eating. The link maggiesmum has posted looks good. I'd also suggest having your forage analysed so you can feed balanced minerals.

Also, Im not a farrier - but I would have thought shoes would help support his feet? I can recommend an amazing farrier on Essex/Suffolk borders who has helped many a horse with navicular go on to resume a full and healthy career... i dont know what part of the UK you are in? PM me if you would like his details?

How do they support the feet?
