My mare is on box rest and I'm having to sedate her while walking her (part of her exercise programme, only 10mins a day atm). She doesn't get too sleepy on her dosage, it just takes the fizz out of her. I was wondering how long to leave before feeding or can you feed whenever as its a mild sedation. She only has a handful of nuts and chaf and haynet....

Hey, i had to give mine sedaline last week as my mare had 2 weeks box rest, the vet suggested it as she was pretty wired when i got her out to trot up for him. He didn't want her running around like a looney, so she was to have before i turned her out. As it happens she was that out of it i had to get her back in,put her to bed early with a big pile of hay. The vet said nothing about food so i guess it's ok to feed. My mare took 2 days to get over the sedaline, and she spat most of it out ! Good luck with yours :)

I've always just fed as usual. Assuming she's not having bucket loads of feed on box rest it should be fine. If you have any doubt read the instructions, will say there.

Thanks guys! I checked the instructions and there wasn't any info re feeding! How silly is that! :-( My vet didn't mention anything and I forgot to ask! I'm sure she'll be fine just wanted a 2nd opinion for peace of mind!

I'm having to use Sedalin for one of mine who is now into his 4th month of box rest but is now allowed turnout in a very small paddock for up to an hour a day. I give him the Sedalin at least 45 minutes before taking him out. Whilst I wait he does have hay and has never had a problem. If the vet has sedated a horse intravenously we always remove all food for at least an hour.

I must be sooooooo lucky on the 12th March marks 8 months total box rest .( cept for coming out for farrier )

she is as calm as the first day . SHE IS 1 IN A 1000000:D

The only time my mare had sedaline was after a flare up of laminitis to stop the toxins building up .

Why is yours on box rest you gals????:)

You are so lucky!

Mine has been on box rest for two weeks but comes out for 10 mins of exercise a day and the last two days she totally exploded! Sedaline really helped today!

She's on box rest as she has damage to her sesamoid ligaments due to irregularities in her sesamoid bones. Presented by soft, swollen fetlocks and lameness. She's having IRAP treatment to help recovery of the ligaments and reduce swelling!

My boy was on box rest for over 5 months and I started to give him sedaline when I had to walk him out. I would give him the sedaline first thing and then feed as normal and then walk out about an hour after that.

Thanks for all your advice guys! I spoke to my vet and she said I can feed as normal, no need to wait as she's on a low dosage and sedaline doesn't contain stop their swallowing reflex! Can't believe it doesn't say anything about feeding on the leaflet that comes with it! x
