My mare has come up with protein lumps and got even more as I had to increase quantities. First thought its the sugarbeet but almost sure its the D&H Pasture Cubes and I am now looking for a cereal free solution.

Are there alternatives to the Allen & Page feed? What about Dengie?

What are protein lumps?

My mare has just come up with some itchy lumps on her neck which someone at the yard said were heat bumps - but could they be protein lumps? I have recently changed her food form pasture mix to horse/pony nuts.

protein poisoning usually happens when feed is changed. if you havent changed anything, it would be very unusual for it to be protein. Can it be anything else? Also, with protein poisoning it usually goes down in a few days as the horse gets used to the change of feed. how long has he had it?

Agree with Rowena it could be something else, is she too hot under her rug? are her rugs "breathable" She can be too hot without showing signs of sweating.
I would give her bran mash with epsom salts for a couple of days, to clear her system out.
