Hi everyone! I posted asking about experiences with IBS in horses but unfortunately didn't get any replies. I have another question though; has anyone had good results with feeding aloe vera to their horse?
Here's my mare's backstory:
My horse has always had wet poo (I've had her for around 18 months) and the previous owner who had her for 3 years said that they were wet as well. In the summer after a short period of bute she started getting colic (5 times in 9 weeks, each needing the vet). There was no impaction, it was just spasmodic. I had her scoped in September which revealed a glandular lesion and this was treated with Omeprazole injections once weekly and twice daily sucralfate syringes for 4 weeks. She was rescoped and the improvement was great and I continued with a stomach supplement and a good management plan in terms of feed etc. Her poo was still wet after but she would range between formed but still wet poo to cowpats. She hasn't lost weight but her coat always looks a little dull and she is lethargic.
She has had a couple of instances of being a bit colicky since the second scope (when I say a bit, not distressed but just kicking her stomach once or twice and lying down and getting straight back up again) and I have given her an Emergency 911 syringe both times and she's been okay and hasn't needed vet intervention. She has had a blood test (I wanted to check that there were no hormonal causes or cysts/tumours on her ovaries) and everything is normal. She did have a very slightly elevated GGT but apparently this is quite normal for the horses in our area (elevated by maybe 2/3 above the normal limit).
Of note, when she was scoped the first time we stopped all feed and hay and she lived out on grass for a month with the ulcer treatment. This is the only time that I have seen her poo go 'normal.'
I've spoken to my vet and we were going to go down the route of rescoping her again and if there were no signs of ulcers then a biopsy of the duodenum and ultrasound of the abdominal wall. However, I've decided to postpone this just for a short period of time whilst I take her off of all feed (which just consisted of a little Pure Easy) to see if this helps at all. She is on EquiNectar (recommended by vet) and GastroPremier from Premier Performance CZ and now just some grass nuts so she can have the supplements.
I feel like the issues may be in her hind gut and the gastric lesion secondary to this. But I was also wondering about IBS hence the stopping of feed.
Any advice regarding aloe vera would be amazing!
