Nope, a bag of feed would only last about a week! I suppose if I was competing properly I would, but as it is, he's fed way less than they say.

No way...if I fed that to my lad, & he is schooled every day, he would baloon into a right porker.

I remember on 'Faking it' on TV, Tim Stockdale showed the girl a bag of feed & told her it would last one of his jumpers about 3 days!

I think we have to realise that what we may consider as heavy work is in truth, when compared to international riders, is only light work. Therefore we need to lessen the amount we feed & reach a happy medium for our horse & his needs.

If feeding a build up or conditioning mix then yes as if you aim to build up your horse then I think you need to feed the reccomended amount for it to have effect. But if just feeding a mix/cubes for maintenece reasons then genrally just feed what I think is the correct balance for what he is doing at the time.

But if feeding a mix/cubes then there is no need to add any additional feed so the reccomendations on the bag do not take into account that you are adding anything else to the feed, but generally (well I do anyway) people will add some kind of chaff and maybe sugarbeet in the winter. A mix is supposed to contain all the nutrients the horse needs in a hard feed.

Murphy definitely gets fed by my eye too! I tailor his food to what he's done that day and plus because he gets AAoil and Bailey no4 and sugarbeet, if I fed the reccommeded on all he'd be a hippo lol

Total ration is 2.5% of the horse's body weight. The amount of concentrate and roughage depends on work load. Moderate workload shouldnt be more than 25% concentrate max.

P.M. if you want any more help, can drench up nutrition knowledge from uni!
