I have a 23year old 14.2hh welsh section d x gelding. He is an ex JA show jumper, so as you can imagine very fizzy! However his condition is hard to up keep. Summer 2015 I decide to retire him from competition, as he really had given his show jumping career his all and I felt he wasn't feeling quite feeling himself, despite continuing to be successful. Following his competition retirement I decided to give him a long 9 months off from being in any work, I do really feel this did him the world of good as he seems to be so happy to be back in work now. My plan with him is to do hacking, beach rides, and fun rides over the winter months, therefore as usual I am expecting a decent condition drop.
Is there any feeds that anyone would recommend that would be good for weight gain, but not give much excess energy?
Thanks.

Top spec fibre plus and senior lite balancer, mine is 37 had lami 10+ years ago so is managed as lami prone, diagnosed cushings nov 15, in the last couple of months I put him on this feed 5 meals a day as he doesn't eat much hay, muzzled through the day, I'm really happy he has gained the weight I wanted him to and he looks really good on this regime. I contacted Top Spec on facebook and messaged them and they got back to my 10pm the same day, and any other time I've messaged them they've got back to me straight away, they are very helpful.

Can also recommend Saracen Releve and Equijewel, my horse stopped eating this but they also are very helpful

Micronised linseed is also good (mine also won't eat it) VERY fussy

I'm feeding a dentally challenged veteran a mix of fast fibre, high fibre nuts and just grass soaked into a mash..

It's all low sugar/starch and definitely doesn't make our pony fizzy, and she's ridden by a 5yo so this is important. .

It has put weight on her :)

How about the A&P range. I've found it very effective for feeding the ones who fizz and fret off any weight. Plus as a soaked feed it is suitable for oldies. My personal suggestion would be to start with cool and collected - but you could start with fast fiber if you think even cool & collected is too high in calories. For my extra fizzy ones I use cool & Collected and additional linseed as the Calm & condition (which is the next step up) causes them to fizz. Power & performance doesn't though.
