Can anyone give me any ideas to feed an older horse who is feeling his age a little ?
He is a TB gelding of 25 years and has just started to get a little stiff behind and a bit grumpy. Doesn't need the vet but I think I just need to pep him up a little with his feed. Looking for an all in one feed to add to the haylage he already gets, any suggestions?
He only gets some gentle hacking and the occasional local show for veterans and he's not very fizzy.

Allen and Page Veteran Vitality, great feed, and my 23 year old loves it; You have to soak it for a few minutes, but it has linseed in which should help with the joints :)

If he's getting a bit stiff behind and grumpy then I personally would be looking for something more specific than an all in one feed where you are giving him lots of things he perhaps doesn't need but too little of the things he does eg micronised linseed is excellent for joints but I don't know how much is in the amount he would be getting a day in a veteran mix. I would get the vet involved, if he is grumpy he is likely to be in pain and you would feel awful if you found out in a few months time that there was something brewing that you could have nipped in the bud. It's horrible to see our horses feeling their age and at this time of year things do stiffen up but they shouldn't have to be in any discomfort.

my old horse gets soaked alfa beet, happy hoof and mix with a good dash of corn oil!!! corn oil is fab stuff it gives them amazing coat and puts on the weight, because the alfa a is soaked it makes the feed soft for her to eat, she has her teeth checked and rasped every 6 months which is best for a old horse to see if any teeth are coming loose etc which stops them from eating!mine also has lots heylage as well! also keep them warm this will help them in there old age!! mine is 24 and doing well xxxxx
