Ok quick questions on feeding, do you leave food down all day or take bowl away after 20-30 mins? (going to ask how many and when she is fed at current to keep routine the same as poss) Also do you wet the food, or does this depend on which food shes on?

Also what the first things you like to teach a puppy, other than obviously housetraining. I'm assuming the basics of sit and recall to start with.

When can they go out after vaccinations? Vet clinic im looking at taking her to, is first jab 8 weeks, followed by another dose at 10 and 12 weeks, is this the norm as I thought it was 2 jabs (assume this depends on the clinics jab procedure etc, i'm going to check with vet practise when I call to book her in tomorrow)

Any other useful stuff like pups first night home, really hope she settles without too much howling or whinging will feel really guilty at leaving her. Am I mad in that i've heard/read that if they are really on if you create abit of loud noise so they stop whinging then you can approach them, hope that makes sense.

Ets ; When would be best timeframe for first puppy bath ? :)
Oh and whats the best comb/brush to buy, she's going to be slightly broken coated jrt (parson as she's long legged)

We have decided on the name... Lexi and we are picking her up weds morning, am wondering what we've let ourselves in for :o

We fed Daisy 3 times a day until she was about 6 months old. I never removed un-eaten food, just let her graze on the left overs. . We fed biscuits lightly soaked with fresh meat accompanying it at lunch time.

She went out in the garden immediately as she'd had first vaccs prior to collection at 12 weeks, plus toodled down our private lane with us too off lead (as this was actually the most important thing to me - a dog I could walk off lead. ) Being so young her natural instinct was to follow us.

Second vaccs were around a weekor so after collection (however they split one of the vaccs now so yes it will be two separate ones).

I'm afraid I gave in and took her to bed with us.

Sit, stay and obviously recall were the first things she learnt.
 
I've got a collie puppy, he only had two injections and is covered. Got him at 12 weeks and he is fed twice a day, eats everything so there is never any uneaten food ! First thing he learnt was to go on a lead as I think it's very important to get them out and about and seeing the world. He sleeps in the living room and has been fine from the word go. Start as you mean to go on, that's my advice, don't over complicate things....
 
Quarrie is still on three meals a day-if there's a bit left I leave it for him to graze on it. He was upset at being alone overnight the first night, so I slept in the living room with him for three nights and during the day taught him to be ok alone and crate trained. I was letting out at about 11pm and up at 5am for a couple of weeks-he's now going through to about 6am when I am up anyway. I've not bathed him yet-was I meant to? ;)

Every morning and night since we picked him up, he's gone on a lead to shut up and open up the hens and ducks, been introduced to the horses and cows and sheep all around. He was also walked up and down our drive which is quite long and usually have an audience of stock.

He also went in short trips in the car daily-poor thing has been a bit car sick a couple of times but is good now. The last week (he's 13 weeks) he's been coming to work with me and going out to the local park to socialise-everything there from angry swans to bouncy castles and many dogs of all types.


I agree, start as you mean to go on but I don't see the point in really upsetting them over something like sleeping alone if they are upset. Last pup was fine alone from the get go, this one took a couple of days and thats fine too.
 
Food should be put down for the pup anything uneaten after 15mins or so should be removed and not put back down until next mealtime. Leaving food down the whole time can lead to picky eaters, and make house training more difficult. If pup is leaving a lot of food then review the amount in the bowl. Be aware that pups often go off their food when teething. As long as they are not ultra skinny then don't panic but keep up the routine.
 
Mine were fed four dropping to three meals a day after a few weeks. Recall is the big thing. They were taken to the yard for cuddles and were straight out into the garden with the older dog.

Two injections is normal, never heard of three. The second lot is to ensure the vaccs work, 1st lot seem pointless?

First night, my lot were crated in the same room as the older dog and we got up if there was noise for wees.

Puppies don't need baths unless they're stinky, which they shouldn't be bar accidents in a crate/bed.
 
Our last pup had 3, lepto or parvo new one at 15 weeks I think? Can't quite remember. Ours was out after 1 anyway, I don't do weeing in the house. :-)

ETA...for the dogs I mean...

Pup will be sleeping in utility room (where we've kept all previous dogs).
Got to phone vet in abit, am I right to leave her few days to settle at home before taking her for first jab, getting her on wed was going to book vet for friday.
She will have a pen in the garden to go out in for wees and for abit of sunshine, she'll also be able to meet and see the peafowls etc no idea what she'll make of them. Any tips on making it clear that chasing them is not on?
Oh another question was car journeys, is it best to do lots of short ones while she's young so she gets used to them (sisters dog is a nightmare to travel) :)

Lots of short trips in the car initially. they can be prone to car sickness when wee just because their inner ears are still developing. Mostly they grow out of it and some are fine from the get go. But if they get sick and then start dreading being sick, it can make travelling a bit fraught (and I sympathise being an awful traveller). So the idea is to to have short trips which end before they get sick-especially if this leads to a fun walk (once clear from jaggs). And try and travel them on an empty stomach as much as possible at first. Even if she's not whining/pacing, if she's a bit drooly, its a sign she's feeling ill.
 
Any advice for stopping the biting with the needle teeth?

Been working on saying ow like a Yelp and just stopping if he bites too hard, as per advice but wondered if I should try anything else? He is starting to be less "enthusiastic" already fortunately for my skin!
 
We just immedaitely stop playing if they bite, take them off and get up, walk away. They soon make the connection, biting = no play.
 
A high pitched ow and turning away always worked for me, and we had 5yo son added into the mix as well getting pup all excited :(

None of our dogs have ever been carsick, they went everywhere with us in the car from the very start...
