Morning, yes they are all fed together on our yard, however in the evenings we all feed our own, as long as they have hay none of them seem bothered, they know their feeders!
YO feeds all the horses in the morning, so they're all done at the same time.
Everyone feeds individually in the evenings - some have had their teas by 4pm, others have to wait till 8pm.
There's only 4 horses in the yard, my two don't get breakfast, the other 2 do, but I don't feed them. I feed Chex and K together at teatime, the other 2 are always fed long before I'm up. At my old yard (with more horses) they were all fed at the same time in the morning. Good in some ways, but annoying in others.
When our yard went DIY I thought this might be a problem. All the horses are fed at different times now, but in fact they don't seem fussed about it. My horse knows my footsteps though long before I come into sight, and always whinnies for her breakfast!
I keep mine at home, so they're all done at the same time. Would drive one of mine absolutely nuts if I didnt feed him. He practically breaks the door down....!
Al fed at the same time morning and night at my yard, unless im riding in the evenings, then i get the yard staff to leave feed outside stable (torture for Bella) and she has to wait until we've finished.
Why don't you leave her a feed with just a handful in it - then at least she will get "fed" at the same time as everyone else.
She can then have her proper dinner after you've ridden...
At my previous yard the place was split in to essentially three. The first person up on each 'yard' fed their section. Now initially this was down to the good will of the owners (DIY Yard). But it proved so successful that each new livery was instructed by the YO that this was policy. If they felt they couldn't comply, then they would not be welcome to stay.
I feed the horses AM on my current yard. I am the only livery, and am first on the yard.
I wonder if you are having a 'some will/some won't' feed in the morning problem? If this is the case then unless your YO is willing to make it a rule, there's not much you can do about it.
However, it's so much nicer for the horses. They know exactly what time they're being fed and no one gets left out. It's pretty sad if people aren't willing to take an extra 5 mins in the morning to do this.
On our yard everyone leaves morning feeds outside stable, first person down feeds them all.
In the evenings we all feed our own, its quite a large yard and none of the horses mind being fed seperatly in the evenings. In the morning however they all wait for their breakfast so would be mean not to feed them all together.
in the DIY barn, in the morning, almost everything gets hayed at the same time and those with hard feed are fed as well because whoever gets there first just goes along and throws hay over the doors. In the evenings, most of the DIY ponies wait for their owners and work on their individual schedual.
On the yard though, we hay as we muck out and hard feed everything when we've finished. I would like to hard feed first thing really but because we have the bigger horses on and off the walker and the ponies going in the T/O paddock it is more straight forward to hard feed at about 11:00 when everything is done.
Briefly, when i joined the yard(inc. me there are 3 owners and 4 horses) a good routine was in place. We all arrived at 8.45-9am ish and the first one in fed all the horses.
I was asked by the YM to come a bit later, rather than earlier, so she could oversee the feeding and ensure her horse in particular didn't get stressed because he was kept waiting.
OK, I complied .
The other owner is so so whilst YM is around but when she takes her holidays the routine goes out the window. The last time YM went away the OP was arriving really early and I noticed my mare was a little stressy when I arrived so I played detective and went early one day to find OP grooming her horses, they had been fed and my horse and YO horse were still waiting for their brekkie
I said I wasn't happy and let YM know on her return .
All was fine for a bit until YM went away again 3w ago and I noticed my mares bed was very messy agaIN. I knew OP was arriving early again but assumed she was feeding our 2 horses at the same time as hers, but no, it's back to how it was
The thing is I know when YM returns the OP will go back to the 'routine'. Anyway, just a rant really, I'm getting tired of the one rule for one scenario especially as I went to this yard because of its good routine Typical
Oh AmyMay, I know! I would much prefer to go in earlier too. I get up at 6am ish to walk the dogs and would be very ready to get to my mare at 7.30am. BUT !!! The YM horse gets really stressed if he is left in the stable whilst the others go out.(my mare and her horse are in a little barn, the other 2 are in 'outside' stables) His owners husband will not tolerate her going in any earlier as he(hubby) needs feeding etc(YM words not mine!) My mare got really stressed too BUT I am putting in the time with her , which I'm happy to say is working
So, I accepted their rules and stuck to them. BUT!!! on saying that I feel that your advice is the way to go. I'll wait until Thursday when YM returns and let her know whats happened, I really don't want to be a 'gossip' but will if it helps Jazz! and what I intend doing if this happens again. That way I won't upset her horse without her knowledge. I wish the OP was conscientious(?sp) too!
Anyway Thanks, you are saying what I feel is right!!
Yes, I really think if they have been stabled all night then they should be fed together, at least put some hay over the door . Especially if these are the yard rules. TBH I wouldn't dream of 'altering' our yards rules when they benefit the horses.Grrr... Some of you may remember that this is not the first 'issue' at the yard. I'm beginning to feel like a troublemaker BECAUSE I adhere to the rules
**********************************************
I don't mean anything negative towards those that choose not too , by the way
I think if there are only 3 of you there then perhaps you could come up with a better system than the one that is in place at the moment surely? Why can't the first person up just feed and turn out all horses? Maybe you could do it on a rota basis?
To be quite honest and possibly quite blunt, as I always am, I would be telling YM to get her lazy ass out of bed and see to her horses......tell her to teach her husband how to cook his own breakfast OR wait till she gets back from doing the horses.
Seems like you are all waiting around for ditsy YM.....
Ok , so I'm in a new Island and a new yard ! and I'm afraid the phrase'we don't like change' is very common BUT I'm only politely and gently trying to keep to the routine that was originally in place
!!! It really is one rule for me and another for them Arrgghh.I admit I have 'spelt it out' to the YM but yet again I'm met with a stony stare. If you remember there was also a issue with poo picking, all I tried to do was ensure a fair system was in place to avoid anyone feeling put upon (ie ME!!!)and hey guess what !!! On this I stuck to my guns and do my fair share only although in Summer this changes, what to who knows, talk about blood from a stone
I do wonder if they resent the fact I've spent the last 25 years working and kept my horses at home for over 10 years, whether they like it or not I do have some ideas to share and discuss.
But you are right too, I need to stop pussy footing around period, and straight talk 100% . Thanks. I'm off to start a new poll now, totally ridiculous that I need to but hey ho !!!
LOL!! Well I wouldn't quite use the same words as I have said .......
Are you the person who was given extra poo picking days when YM goes away on holiday? And then when you were going away you had to pay someone to come in and do your share??
I must stop being a doormatI must stop being a doormatI must stop being a doormat
I refused to do it this time so YM has had to pay someone to do her share as she didn't want the other owner to have to do it all, ermm like I did last time
I tell you Tia, I seriously didn't realise how great it is when your horses are at home....
