Feeding before riding?

I have always given my horses access to hay/lage while grooming and tacking up. I can see no problem, whatsoever. My current horse was difficult to deal with in the stable and girthy. I made sure that she always had something to eat while I was getting ready to ride and now she is absolutely fine. She is well-mannered and takes her head out of the hay when asked to do so.
I can see no reason for making life difficult for the owner or unpleasant for the horse, so why not feed before riding? I would never give a cereal feed though.

Roo always has a haynet when she's tied up, not particullarly because of concerns about ulcers but because she's a grumpy madam when hungry and it's so much easier just to have a haynet in front of her. She's much happier and co-operative :p:p

I always thought hay/haylage was fine, any time (before riding, after riding etc) - it is just hard feed that you need to be careful with before/after riding. Mine always has a haynet in her stable when I'm tacking up so she munches away, haynet is still there after I've ridden as well so she can eat when shes back in as well.

My horses life revolves around food so to tie him on the yard without a haynet would be like torturing him to within an inch of his life, lol

If I ride in the morning I ride an hour after he has had his hard feed and thats at weekends when we go out for a ploddy hack anyway so nothing too strenuous.

Yep always given haynets when they have been tied up. Have also given a small amount of chaff and fast fibre to one who suffered from ulcers. Never had any suffer from it.
