Hi, I just wondered if anyone has any experiences of feeding their horses charcoal? My mare wind sucks a bit and can be hard to keep weight on. It is nothing too serious so I thought I would try the new Gastro-Kalm from Equus Health to see if that avoids going down the whole vet/ ulcer route which will cost a fortune. If you have had any results with charcoal I would be interested to hear them. thanks!:)

I feed one of mine charcoal. She cribs (used to do it all the time, on fences, doors, you name it, she bit it) and it seems to have made that final bit of difference to her. Having gone all the usual routes to reduce her cribbing, she was still doing it after meals and after a treat. Once I added the charcoal in, within a few days, she'd stopped cribbing after meals.

She possibly/probably has ulcers, but for various complicated reasons it's not likely that I'll be able to get her scoped and GG'd up, so charcoal and slippery elm bark are standing in. The combination seems to suit her and her symptoms have eased off a lot. It's not perfect, but it's much much better than not being able to do anything!

Charcoal didn't work for my mare but a teaspoon a day of baking soda does. Pure Aloe Vera has been the best but it is rather pricey. Natural yoghurt is good too.

The product which I have used that has stopped my new boy cribbing is ulcer calm from feedmark, it took 2 weeks to work as they tell you, now he has not cribbed for a couple of weeks, I'm very impressed.

I feed Happy Tummy charcoal to one of my horses who had a serious bout of colitis. I've fed her the charcoal ever since and she has had no further digestive problems. She's never cribbed so I have no idea if it works for that.
