I used to feed James Wellbeloved, then changed to Country Pursuit which is very similar but £6 a sack cheaper. Now that's gone up too to around £30 for 15 kg and while it would never make me give my dogs up it does make me question whether to take another 1 or 2 which I would really like to do

Does anyone feed a cheaper good quality food/diet?

I'm feeding Burns at the mo which is not cheap but we used to use Supadog which is about £20 for 15kg so half the price of Burns. Also Gellerts do a good dog feed called Country Choice chicken and rice, mum feeds her JRT's on that, wheat and gluten free e.t.c and reading the ingredients, nothing nasty in there. That's around £19 for 15 kg and then there is Skinners which I'm told is a good dog feed.

I get a lot of free stuff from our local butcher, then buy tinned fish and chicken wings and pet mince of our butcher too.
I found complete dry food got too expensive when we had 5 dogs, we now have 6

I used to feed Oscars, which was really good but pricey.
Especially as I fed competition/working dog feed in the show season (dog agility - so they had higher protein as working quite hard) that was £40 a bag. Which really wasn't economical when it only lasted couple of weeks :S

Marley can you recommend a good raw snack for a 10 1/2 week old labrador puppy? I have only given my big boy raw recently and what he has is probably too big for her, perhaps a little chicken wing to start?
Thank you

My pups were both eating raw chicken wings when I got them at 8 weeks old

With pups you can always hold the wing (i hold both ends and let them chew the meaty bit in the middle) and they can have a good gnaw on it (also helps for having well behaved dogs around food if they are used to you being involved in the process).
Alternatively you could always mince up a chicken wing slightly (I'd of thought a food mixer would have a good enough blade?) or bash it so it breaks up? then it doesn't look quite so scary as it's not one big thing that you can visualise disappearing down your lovely pups throat! I always cringe a little the 1st time in the hope they chew not swallow!
A friend had a litter of puppies a little while ago and we were sat in the pen when they were 6 weeks old holding wings for them - they loved it! Although we got very messy with 6 puppies clambering up trying to grab the wings!
Hope your lab puppy enjoys it

Lol...my £40 a bag dog feed barely lasts a few days

Agree with what you say though, butchers will probably be pleased to give you chicken carcasses, lamb ribs e.t.c especially around busy times like Christmas. Just not so practical if you don't have enough freezers and also if you need to feed in the house

Ouch

We had to buy a chest freezer for the dogs food!!
And yes true about feeding in the house - I'd like a stable by the house for my lot! With some nice dog beds in it and all their stuff for feeding them!
My mum goes spare about having to mop the kitchen floor so often!!
Gets a bit of pain falling over 6 dogs eating their bones too! If it's not raining they mostly get put in the garden but then they run off to the fields and get muddy so it's usually a toss up between raw meat or mud in our house!!

I feed meat and dry..chudleys working crunch, it's about £10 a bag, I use 1 a week and meat, on my own and extra depending on how many rescues I have in.
I like the chudleys, they also do a classic, my dogs look fab on it

My mam uses 2 bags a day

on all hers...£140 a week on dry

y alone, thats not including the meat, which she should not really use, for costs sake.

I've heard of Chudleys so good to know that you use it CALA. Am I being picky in not wanting them to have things coated in wheat syrup to make them palatable or in giving them gluten free stuff? I have no evidence that either causes a problem so perhaps I need to rethink. I'd like to feed raw but I'm a vegetarian and that raw meat smell makes me heave but I did try them on chicken wings a while ago and they wouldn't eat them. I may have a look at the homemade food diet I was given a while back and see how expensive that works out, or try the chudleys at £10 a sack. How good value is that! What meat do you mix with it CALA?

Chudleigh's working crunch here is nearly £15/bag!! I fed that for years but have changed over to Skinners Field and Trial maintenance, similar price, dogs love it and seem to be healthy and happy

Whooo hoo, it's a bargain here then

Just normal tinned meat, I only put a little bit in, for a treat, must be crap always eating dry.....then again.....im prob humanising there, and thinking what I would like, i.e a bit of steak with my chips

It is a bargain, it;s really good stuff, it goes like hot cake, when I go to the feed merchants or whole salers for the stuff.

Ps, I have not seen lurcher, mam said, she is a grey shaggy type, like merlin, but smaller and hairier, will try to get up and get a picci tomorrow

We feed Skinners Duck and Rice hypoallergenic stuff - it's almost £20 for a 15kg sack, so still cereal free like JWB/Burns etc but much cheaper. I think they do Salmon and Rice too, but that is more expensive.
I'm still plucking up the courage to go raw, so hypoallergenic is the compromise atm!!!

Grey shaggy types are my favourite! Don't let her go to anyone else as I am serious this time about rehoming one and if we can work out transport..............

out of interest, have any of you ever had salmonella
grin.gif

That's 'supposed' to be a wives tail. Salmonella coming from raw meat fed to dogs, apparently the acids required to break down bone kills the salmonella, however there will always be traces in the stools.

I've not come across it anyway.

No!! This is a bit of a myth if it's associated with Raw feeding, a healthy dog fed raw should not be affected by any such bacteria, as above a dog has evolved a very short acidic gut that does not give bugs a chance to take hold and multiply. However grain and some other dried feeds are digested far more slowly than natural foods, this will allow the nasties to take a firm hold!!

PMSL - 'cos a dog in the wild (or a pet if given half the chance) would think "Hmm, I've killed said chicken BUT is it safe to eat it, what with the risk of salmonella!"
grin.gif
sorry, just a thought!

Ours are fed on tripe and complete, I think it's called Macs or something like that. Pups are fed on Royal Canin but that is about £40 a sack

If all you want is to give your dog a treat I'd give a raw carrot - low calorie and great for the teeth.. also encourages them to chew.

I feed Chudleys working crunch too. Like all greyhound and working feeds it is VAT free.

It's 24% protein so ideal for skinny dogs and active dogs.

Also contains devils claw and green lipped mussel for mobility.

I have a boxer and a lab on it who look fantastic. My lurcher also ate he. I have a 8 month old staffie arriving next week who will also go on it.

All these breeds are known for having skin conditions but mine have good skin and very glossy coats.
