My dog (dachshund) is a fairly fussy eater, when it comes to dry food at least. He's always been given a complete dried, with a bit of tinned mixed in (he won't touch any brand of dried on its own) but even then he hardly ever eats it all. The only time he does finish a bowl is when I mix it with tinned sardines for a change. I do this about once a week, it seems to suit him and he has a lovely coat. But could I give him fish with his dried food every day?

I suppose if he really was hungry he'd have to eat what I put down, and he is very fit, not a scrap of fat and can run for hours, so maybe there's no need to make him eat more....

Why not feed a complete wet food that has fish in it? Burns and James Wellbeloved do them and with them I have found them very palitable with dogs and it is a good quality food.

I have friends who feed tinned sardines in oil daily to their elderly lab who has arthritis; they have done this for at at least three years with no problems.

My GSPs get sardines or mackerel in oil about twice a week on average. I don't think it will give your dachshund any problems other than maybe making him a bit loose in his motions. (My dogs are 25kg and 35kg)

Why not build up to it slowly, monitor what comes out and adjust accordingly? Maybe half a can a day would be more appropriate for a smaller dog?

I know I keep recommending it on here but Fish4Dogs is an excellent food and their Salmon Mousse is designed as a topper/mixer for fussy eaters.

They recently had a BOGOF deal on the big boxes which worked out at 90 pouches for £21, if he likes it it's worth signing up to the newsletter and waiting for the deal. :)

I'm sorry to be frivolous, but every time I see the title of this thread I think of koi carp or tanks of exotic fish, and wonder why someone is posting about them in AAD :o:o:D

My border collie has fish 3 or 4 times a week mixed in with her dried food as she has arthritus. Pilchards are her fav

I also feed sardines as a treat once a week, and my allergic pug gets Taste of the Wild salmon, grain-free formula to keep his itching under control.

My springer has sardines every morning, she had itchy skin, maybe seasonal who knows but she gets them every day, can also vouch for fish 4 dogs, mine isn't fussed but my friends cocker loves it all

My friend keeps koi as well as working GSD. To be honest, in a fair fight, my money would be on the koi, they're massive! And one even likes to have his belly tickled.....

A garden centre I go to has a koi that must be easily 30kg+! I suspect it could easily eat a dog! :D

Lots of people I know feed pilchards/sardines/canned fish regularly. My dogs basically eat a raw diet and I find the tins of pilchards a great "emergency" food to keep on hand.
