My 12 year old ISH has always been a good doer and I have always struggled to get him acting and looking really fit. This spring I managed it and he looked and felt great, and we evented throughout the summer. He has now wound down and has currently had 3 weeks off. The problem is, he hasn't gained any condition, and although his neck and rump look in a good condition, I can not only feel, but see all his ribs.
He's out all day with grass (although i realise this isn't good quality at this time of year) and a cosy rug, he has haylage alfalfa a little competition mix and soya oil.
I have just been to the feed merchant and studied all the feeds (having not had to change feeds for years I was confused by all the options!) and I have got some Baileys conditioning cubes. Was this a good idea? Is there anything else I should be doing? He will come back into work in the next couple of weeks and i will obviously have to start uping the food intake then, but I'd sooner he looked 'well' to start.
