What recommendations do you have for a kibble based food that’s not too expensive?

Dog is a mixed breed 5yrs old 20kg good fit weight but would like him to have a bit more stamina when I ride out with him. Currently he’s on a cup of Pets at Home Step up to Naturals kibble and 1/4 can butchers twice a day plus a couple of treats. I’ve just started giving him Riaflex joint supplement as a protective as he currently (touch wood) has no known health issues.

Also I take water with me in saddle bags on longer rides especially when it is warm but is there anything extra I can give him? I’m not sure if Cani-crossers use anything?

thanks 😊

Back in the day we used to bait water with tuna for the racing dogs but there's lots of options for water additives now - current agility dog has a tendency to not drink enough on show days and give himself an irritated urinary tract so I've tried a few. Last year used Oralade, currently using DoggyRade and I picked up the new Oralade Active at Crufts to try this summer.

Thanks I’ll look at those.

I use wither Furr Boost or diluted goats milk for ours when competing as the pointy faces won't drink away from home. Fizz especially no matter how hot it is or how hard she's raced, will not drink water. She's keener on milk then the meaty flavours. We've tried oralade but she wasn't keen but I suspect its because she had it while she was really ill last as opposed to anything else.

I know a few people who give their dogs energy bars on competition days as opposed to changing food and they swear by it.

I haven’t tried these yet but Skinners do wrapped energy bars in both the Field and Trial and new ‘get out and go’ ranges. Royal Canin also do handy 50g packets of energy kibble which I have used as breakfast on show days (these are cheapest on Zooplus).

Thanks for all the replies. Do you think there is a better daily kibble I could use as well? I was looking at some working dog kibble in the feed store this morning but it didn’t have any higher protein levels than what I’m already feeding. Is protein that relevant to energy for dogs or is there something more useful? Thanks

Essentials Stamina is very high calorie and protein (35%). Mine were only on it for the shooting season but it did them well. They did still run up light but not too bad.
Kronch is very instant hyperness. I’m not a fan but it certainly gives them a boost.

CSJ do a variety a fairly priced kibble, some of which are targeted at dogs requiring plenty of energy.

For canicross/bikejor we don't feed morning of races, bait water with mlk or give bone broth at least 2 hours before running. Small meal when cooled down and then larger dinner. Of the energy bars I like the Skinners ones or simply fatty cheap coctail sausages.

Check the calorie level in your food, add more calories with higher fat if needed.

I use the Skinners energy bars for agility and find they do work.
