Hey! Don't suppose any of you can help me..

I've got a 16hh cobxthoroughbred mare.
Shes got an amazing jump, but the problem is, she can be really lazy when we're jumping and when we go to ponyclub rallies and competitions she'll jump the first couple great but then it's like she gets bored and gets really lazy, which tires me out.

At the moment, I'm feeding her a big scoop of spillers happy dieter (because she gets fat in the summer), a scoop of oats and some garlic twice a day.
Does anyone know if there's anything i can feed her to make her more excitable and hyper?

Is Happy Dieter supplemented with vit/mins? If so, are you feeding it at recommended levels so she gets her full RDA?

It is possible she is lazy because although her calorie intake is sufficient, her intake of vit/mins is deficient. You could try feeding her a broad spectrum vit/min supplement (Equivite Original, Benevit, TopSpec Comprehensive etc) or a balancer (Bailey's Low Cal, TopSpec Comprehensive Feed Balancer, Blue Chip etc).

Has she always been like this, or is the laziness recent? Might be worth having some bloods checked.

Also, if she tends to be a bit of a fatty, make sure she has a good fitness regime which should help give her the energy to do the work you want.

my friends welsh cob has the same problem and she's trying her on an endurance mix, either spillers or baileys i think, she's only been on it 2 weeks so cant really say whether its helping or not!

Thanks very much for the advice!

Yes its got a load of vit/mins in it, as its meant to be a fibre feed low in calories but with vit/mins, but I'll double check that I'm feeding her enough. Thanks for that list of feeds, i'll take a look.
She never used to be as lazy when jumping but that might have been because she'd just started off. she's always been a bit on the slow side with schooling though.

I can remember someone telling me to feed her electrolytes, does anyone know if these make a difference?

id jus remove the oats, remove the happy dieter and give a scoop of spillers instant energy mix, keep an eye on her weight incase it goes up (shouldnt but you never know!)

If she's really working hard, and sweating out necessary salts and minerals, then - yes - an electrolyte could be a good idea. But it doesn't sound as though she's in that kind of work and a broad spectrum supplement would be more appropriate. Mistakes can be made with electrolytes that result in a dehydrated horse.
