yes.. more work.. as fitness up's so does 'oomph' otherwise you can try straights but then you have to be careful to balence all straights. its not adviseable to feed straights if you have no previous experience of them (no syaing you dont)
I have been giving my boy baileys number 10, which is race horse mix and it has made the world of difference to him. I tried oats but they don't seem to do a lot. He is 16.2 and weighs just under 700kg (hes a cob) and if hes only worked once a day or theres no competition or seriously hard lessons coming up he just gets a couple of handfulls in his feed working up to half a scoop if there is more to do (he gets two feeds a day). I really has made a difference.
For general respiratory fitness and perkiness he is also getting propell.
the best thing is to feed veg oil, is this helps slow release of food and helps food get utilised more effieciently. It also provides a bit extra. introduce VERY slowly and depending on size of horse 1-2 cup fulls twice a day. Feed withg aa vit E supplement too.
If you are on hay then switch ot a good qualuity haylage, all the competition yards use haylage near hear is it is the cheapest way of getting more 'bang for your bucks' if you will pardon the expression!!
Nailed - he has been in harder work now for about 6 months, with my cousin riding him a couple of times a week and competing him in dressage, I compete him in showjumping and go on long hacks. I don't have any experience of straights but my cousin does.
ProperBo and Markc - he already has oil (although I feed corn oil as opposed to veg oil) he gets 1/2 a cup a day and he is on haylege not hay.
