Hi - can anyone tell me please what to feed my TB thats is on box rest. He is not excitable and is quite happy so that is not an issue. He has already started to lose condition cos he is not getting his grass

hey,

I'd avoid high protein feeds just incase she ties up when u start to ride her or when she goes out in the feild again and goes for a good old gallop! (thats what mine did when she was on BR for 5 days and on build up.)

You could try giving her as much good quality haylage as she'll eat and a couple of scoops of course mix a day and a couple of scoops of pink powder?

Hope this helps

Ditto the pink powder, or some other type of feed balancer. I'd go for high fibre, maybe alfa a and high fibre cubes? you could also add oil. If losing weight what about using one of those feed balls to give extra cubes during the day without overloading the gut all at once? Also add lib haylage.
Bottle of wine for you - box rest sucks!!!!

At the mo hes on speedibeet to keep weight on, apple mollichaff and Top Spec Feed Balancer with hay. Can change to haylage but what about the rest? Is that ok?

Simple System feeds are great as they are fibre only, no added sugars and keep the weight on without fizzing them up. They are great for advice you can contact them via www.simplesystem.co.uk or call their helpline 01728 604008.

I had a TB on box rest all winter on their Lucibix & unmollassed sugar beet, recovered well from his op, kept his weight on & not a problem at all to walk in hand & eventually turn out.

D&H Convalescence Diet? Used it for my 17hh 3 year old after a hock op which needed months of box rest. She liked the mix and it didn't over excite her.

I don't think I would change much, box rest is stressful enough without introducing an entirely new diet. If he hasn't been fed haylage before I would be careful about introducing it as can upset tummies if horse is sensitive. I can't feed it all to my TB as too rich.
I would swop to alfa a oil & how about feeding some readi grass in a bucket as a grass replacer!
When my TB was on box rest I also fed him several buckets a day of the real thing - obviously wasn't the same as being on it all day but at least it kep some grass going through his system which made introducing back to grass less of a drama.

ETA - another vote for NAF Pink Powder - fantastic stuff!

Also DITTO the recommendations for Pink Powders! My vet recommended it after my filly's condition took a downward turn after her spell in hospital following the hock op and it really helped. Definitely worth a try.

It wouldn't be the protiens in build up that mader him tie up it would be the starch. Just keep giving her plenty of fibre, in different sources if she gets bored so things like a hay net, just grass and happy hoof in different containers so he can mooch around and nibble like he would in the field.

Speedibeet is lami trust approved so will NOT PUT/KEEP weight on and apple chaff is just straw, mollasses and flavourings. Look for something fibre and oil based so you are keeping the fibre up and giving him his callories through the oil. I use winergy equilibrium growth which then you wouldn't need a balancer either.

fingers crossed he's back in action soon, its awaful when they're stuck in, esppecially at this time of year!
