hi there

i have a welsh cob he is 4 years, and 15.3hh whom at the moment is fed on haylage and happy hoof

however this will change for the summer months when he has hay instead.

i'm looking to change or add to his feed to make him more show condition like.

he is not under weight now but could do with gaining some top line ( this will probably come with work as well)

i would like to know of anything to make them look really well and glossy! or just to stand out in the ring

i have heard of linseed and sunflower seeds,
but do these really work? and
how do you feed linseed- soaked or unsoaked or can you get micro nised verion of it
and do i just add to current feed? if so how much....

any help would be appreciated

thankyou

Black oil sunflower seeds (BOSS) are great for adding condition & coat shine and you'd just give him around half a mug full in his feed. My pony will be going on a small handful daily soon in preparation for show season.
Mine's been on a small drizzle of veg oil for a few months, which I've just upped to about a 1/4 of a mug a day (she's a mini!) and can see the difference in her coat already, despite it being a growing out clip & horrendously thick.
I've just bought some linseed oil from somewhere online and will swap to this when veg oil runs out.
You can buy it both ready to feed & uncooked. I can't help with prices though!

you could just swap the happy hoof for winergy senior (sounds odd i know) but higher in oil than the low energy or happy hoof. all mine are on winergy and they just bloom - really look healthy from the inside out.

When my daughter's pony is showing she is just fed plenty of hay, high fibre cubes and 100ml of veg oil a day for extra coat shine, which works for her, as I think you will see below!

Chancer, my gypsy cob and now Farra our clydie have black sunflower seeds, instant linseed and equilbra 500. The combination gives them darker coats, real gloss to them and the equilbra really puts the muscle but not fat on. Mine are rising 5.

They also get just grass/green gold from Simple Systems, little speedibeet, the must have carrots and adlib hay or nibble grazing.

If I need a bit more condition, I tend to keep them fairly trim I add some spillars conditioning cubes.

Mine has started to get a much better top line as he is maturing and starting to do more work and developing muscle.

I get my linseed (along with brewers yeast) from Charnwood Milling - far cheaper than anyone else I have found and they will ship to you for a reasonable cost.

Amounts - BOSS - small coffee mug (1/4 pint) twice a day and the same with the linseed. In show season I sometimes feed up to double that for condition and shine.
