Hi - I want to try and get a bit more weight/condition onto my hunter for WH classes this season. Anyone got any good tried and testeds they can suggest?

What I don't want to do is stuff him full of feed as he's pretty sharp as it is(!) and some of the mixes can do that too them I think.

xx

I feed mine on Sugar beet, AlphA with oil and a vitamin supplement and neither of my two have any problem holding weight I have tried everything including Racehorse mix and this is what works best for them. - they are also on adlib haylage which is fed from the floor to improve the topline.

Mine do very well on Simple Systems just grass and greengold alfa chaffs with linseed, brewers yeast, black sunflower seeds plus speedibeet.

Combination gives a lovely coat, weight as it should be and enough energy but not daft. I like to have mine muscled and not fat, ie can feel ribs and no wobbly bits.

If I want a little more energy I either up the speedibeet or give them red grass nuts - which have the energy equivalent of oats.

If Stinky drops any topline during the season, I have found a very quick top me up is to feed him equilbra 500 and spillars conditioning cubes and I can have him tip top in a few weeks of doing this plus appropriate work.

To gain weight a horse needs to eat more energy than it uses for day to day activities. To minimise exitability and digestive disorders it is safer to stick to fibre and oil sources rather than starch.

Alfalfa with oil would be a good choice as it will provide protein for muscle (obviously need correct training too) and relatively high energy without the starch of many other feeds.

Baileys outshine (not cheap) at minimum dose for its energy value, but you will also get condition and coat shine from it as well. Together with Alfalfa and unmolassed beet. You shouldn't have any problems with silliness on this kind of feed, but you will have sufficent energy.

Mine are on Dengie, Top Spec Feed Balancer (as then i know they are getting all they need) and Spillers Conditioning Cubes. Dont like adding mixes etc as i know they have the balancer so getting all they need then the Conditioning Cubes are just for the top line!!

alfa a or good doer, grass nuts, speedi beet and maximum dose linseed. Everything else is just maintainance, but cannot stress how much I appreciate linseed. Old fashioned, and it works!
