feeding garlic and home made fly repellents!

im looking for an effective fly deterrent i can put in my broodmare's feed who is out 24/7 and due to foal nxt month.

as the field she's in at the moment is a bit marshy and flies are a huge problem already i want something that will last longer than a citronella/fly spray that will need to be reapplied several times a day to be effective.

ive heard garlic is a useful fly deterrent for horses. Anyone have any experience of this?
can it be fed as a crushed up clove straight from the bulb?


us horse owners will spend a fortune buying anti-fly products of all descriptions this summer. seems to be there must be something equally effective at repelling flies we could make ourselves and save some money!

Any one have any home made concoctions they've discovered and swear by either as feed additives or sprays/topical solutions?
 
I tried the garlic idea when I was a sheff and got it by the bucket load for next to nothing. Used it with my Arab and it never worked, no change at all, if you find anything that does work, let us all know please :)
 
I feed a fair amount of garlic and use Avon (human) spray as fly spray.

Was not inclined to spend money on it, OH has some for his and given up the argument as it's the only thing I've ever seen work!

anyone had any luck with feeding/using anything they've discovered flies hate or are we stuck with manufactured fly repellents?
 
garlic will only really work if the horse gets hit and sweats on a regular basis, so the garlic odour would escape through the pores of the horse, i have fed it to my 2 fillies since i got them in september and november, it works as a worm deterant too. It is meant to stop them getting colds etc too
