Do you think garlic really makes a difference to your horse?

Lil was fed garlic by her previous owner and she gave me the end of the tub she had been feeding when I bought her. I'm feeding up the end of the tub as I didn't see any point in throwing it away and I didn't want to change too many things in her life all at once.

Do you think I should buy more when it runs out? She doesn't have sweet itch although obviously no horse likes flies and she will have a fly sheet on in summer to keep the worst of them off.

My feeling is that she probably doesn't need it but I don't want to be stingy if its helping her.

i find it helps but not massively though since i've been feeding the little one garlic she hasn't had sweet itch (she has a fly rug and spray on as well).

Mine don't have sweet itch but I was horrified to find them covered in mosquitoes the other evening so I've re-started with the garlic in the hope that the mozzies will find better tasting blood somewhere else.

I wokdn't know, when we tried to feed Toto garlic in his dinner, we used real garlic and chopped it up into really really small pieces, and somehow he managed to eat all of the chaff and left every single piece of garlic at the bottom of the bowl. No idea how he did it :p

I feed garlic powder all year round. I dont know whether it keeps the flies away. Apparently they sweat it out and flies dont like it so stay away. Its good for other things though. Respiratory system is one of them. Its entirely up to you if you think its worth feeding. :)

Garlic apparently boosts the immune system so its best not to feed if they've got sweet itch-only recently found this out! I feed it the rest of the year though.

I fed my mare garlic last spring/summer, she came out in loads of bumps and fly bites, took her off it and she was fine, so I don't bother with it now. We've got a shetland with sweet itch all he has is his boett on and brewers yeast and he is fine, it gets very severe if left.

i feed it for circulatory reasons as arthirits and navicular - mine cant have fly spray in summer as is allergic to them!!!! she came out in chemical type burn last yr! but garlic doesnt really seem to help when comes to flies though - she has piriton when gets bitten!

I feed it via the essential oil (yes there is one, it's vile), diluted down in sunflower oil. I use it to help prevent mud fever (it kills the bacteria dead), and for fly protection, as well as all the other benefits too. It stinks, but he loves it. I don't..
