Where I am the flies are ridiculous
We have a stream just below our yard and woods all the way round it, so there is a LOT of flies.
Obviously they'll be dying off soon so I wont worry too much right now, (she is fly sprayed every day )

But for next spring/summer, the fly spray wears off by the time I go down on an afternoon (after Ive sprayed in the morning) so does garlic REALLY work as a fly deterrant? If it does Ill feed her it next year

I feed my boy Brewers Yeast, mainly because he helps his sensitive stomach but it does have the added bonus of making his coat beautiful and being a fly deteriant. (sp) I did use garlic for a while but became worried about the negative reports.

I used to feed garlic to my boy daily but it never worked as a fly deterrant. The flies around my area obviously loved the taste of garlic! I stopped feeding it to him as I too became worried about the negative reports.

Recent research suggests that garlic does not deter flies as previously thought, marmite or brewers yeast seems to help some horses, in large doses it can cause anaemia although i suspect some are more affected by it than others, my old mare would go off colour within days if fed any amount of garlic. if you do a search on here you'll also find the papers about garlic being carcinogenic. Personally I feel the negatives far outweigh any benefits.

I definatly notice a difference when I feed my lad garlic, whenever I run out and he has to go a few days without the flies are swarming round him, when he's on it, they don't bother. We also feed it to our dogs to keep fleas at bay, which also works we find :)
