As our horses are going to live out this winter they will be having their hay in field. Don't want to just put it on ground as it makes grass die so does anyone have any smart ideas for feeding hay in field. I was thinking of getting big tub trug's and putting bricks in bottom to stop them falling over and feeding hay in these xx

My horses often live out in the winter, and to be honest i just scatter it far and wide as possible, i have never had problem with grass dying, if you keep feeding in one area it gets terribly churned up, unless you have an area of hardstanding of course!

I feed in piles round the field so that they dont eat in the same place every day, and more piles than horses so they dont fight over it

Ditto, never known it to kill the grass, and always more piles than horses. Only problem is when the wind blows it away!!!

Am really lucky in that I can feed it in small hole nets - usually put 4 nets out for 4 horses and they always end up sharing - am so lucky that they never fight and are happy to share and swap about. Have fed it on the ground before, but it got terribly churned up and made the mistake of feeding it in the same place and yes the grass did die underneath.

could you constuct a manger type thing to keep it off the ground? literally mean a baby jesus type o thing? lol cant be hard to put together?!

i put small bales into a round sheep feeder , stops in blowing about & getting trodden into the mud , but do choose your position carefully or it can get very muddy around the feeder
