anywhoo after all my hard work, i am starting to cringe at how his owner is feeding his hay. for a 16.2 he is in a relatively small stable, and his haynet is tied quite high. i was watching him the other day and he stands really close to it, take a bite from the top and pulls back - and i can see the underside muscles in his neck working overtime!!

which im really not fond off, because if i am spending 4/5 hours a week trying to get his to stretch his topline and he spends more hours in his stable where he is undoing all our hard work!

is there anything on the market at the moment that i could use to feed his hay from.......i would suggest feeding it from the floor but his onwer won't have that.

sorry if this description doesn't make much sense - its hard to describe without piccies

Its definitely a haybar we have 6 horsea on on our yard using them.I will be putting one in this week as my horse is on box rest.I always feed half hay on the floor I would do all of it but he muches it in pooh.Hence the need for the haybar .They work really well much less wastage and good for their necks.£50 from our local feed store but more everywhere else. They have them on ebay if you want to look

the hay bar type it in google they are about £70 i think they do take up quite a bit of space in the stabel though so if the stableis already small thenmaybe not practical.
A friend of mine has two rubber skips in the stable which she puts hay in they are attached via clips to the stable wall so hey dont fall over. May be worth a try seems to work for her!

I am a believer of feeding on the floor. It is natural for the horse and allows any mucus/snotty stuff to drain when they are eating from the floow

ive just started giving two horses their hay off the fllor, i gave them some loose and some in a net and they chose to eat the floor hay.
i have to use a net for another horse though as he doesnt like to have his door shut so the hay would be dragged out of his door and blow up the yard

You could probably make your own haybar out of plywood...
I think it is great that you really want to feed from the floor, IMO it is the best thing that you can do for your horse in regards to feeding hay.

a Hay bar or stuff it into a tub trug, after years of feeding hay from the floor I've gone back to haynets as I'm sick of my pony mixing her hay into her bedding! Her haynet is hung high enough for her not to get a leg caught when it's empty but not so high she's reaching up above her head. I guess thats what you get for feeding ad-lib hay though, when she's back on rations I'll feed it from the floor again.

We got a mahoosive tub trug thing rather than a haybar coz its was less expensive and is very easy to clean out.

sorry to be thick - what is a tub trug? and where do i get one??

edited to say i know what one is - but do they not just get pulled over in the stable???

I feed my lad from the floor but to keep the hay together I put it in a huge rubber/plastic skip which I clip to the wall in the corner. This does the same job as a Hay Bar, but it alot cheaper.

That is exactly what I do!

i hate haynets too, but feed my mare from a small holed one because she is a fattie and otherwise she would have eaten all her hay in half an hour and be stood being bored for the rest of the night!
Does anyone have any ideas of how i can feed it lower but still slow her down??
