Badger never does very well in the winter, but because he hasn't got that fat this summer due to no good grazing, he is looking pretty skinny already!

A bit of back ground - he's a 16.3 MW, hunts once a week. He's currently on Baily's No.4, rolled oats, sugar beet and Alfa-A (The stuff with extra oil for skinnies). I'm not sure on the exact quantities as mum feeds him but i gather quite a lot! He is also on Coligone as he has suffered from colic and cribs a lot. He has as much hayledge as he can eat and always eats his feeds.

Any idea's what we could give him to fatten him up a bit?? He is full of energy and a happy horsey, I think it's just how he is, but mum likes her horses to look well!

Any idea's/help would be fab!!

falcon feeds omega rice supp is great,my mare looks fab still when norm she drops off once grass goes in oct! i also use calm&condition wiv baileys no.4. oh and ab lib hay in field!

I currently feed Ali a scoop of cooked mix and a scoop of beet pulp with some Baileys Outshine twice a day. He gets ad-lib hay when he's stabled at night and is currently turned out during the day on very good quality grazing (which definitely won't last!). He looks a hell of a lot better now than he did back in late July...

we have put our youngsters on what is called around here "thirds" it s the part that is taken out of bran when it is refined.
looks like bran in powder form.
they have had 1/2 scoop morning and night along with their usual feed.
it has worked a treat, and cheap which is an added bonus.

good luck.

Soak you oats for 12hrs and drain them with a sieve. Took that advice from someone on here and it worked brilliantly with my girl who goes like a whippet in winter. Dry oats doesn't have the same effect it seems.

I discovered the "Simple Systems" stuff about 2 years ago as had a skinny TB that never kept weight on through winter. I use the "Lucie Nuts" which is Lucerne, you soak the nuts like beet nuts, they love it, and it is also cheap to feed. I mix it with Hi-Fi or similar and their Non molassed Beet nuts too.
I find it doesn't blow their brains like some other weight gaining feeds. Well worth a try, they deliver and it has a really long shelf life which is a bonus.

simple systems was used at our yard, looked good, idea makes sense BUT my god, they sh*te 4 england,im talking 30 40 poohs a day, this feed obv just goes straight thro the gut, very quick. Baileys weight gain and falcon feeds -omega rice(get large bag,24 pounds but lasts ages,as its a fat supp).works wonders. And is so simple to feed. They deliver direct 4 free(if u ask nicely)or your local feed store shud??get in 4 you.goodluck
ive tried everything wiv my fussy tb mare 4 weight gain&this is actually doing its job!

D&H Build UP! or a lot of ppl I know, myself included when I had a skinny TB I used to show, I use to use D&H 16+ that was fabulous for putting on weight.
The amount i had to feed him on Baileys was stupid and he couldnt physically eat it even split into 4 feeds. However, i fed less 16+ and he loved it and put weight on.
I also use D&H Ultimate Balancer helps too

You use Coligone which is fab, i would have suggested Biotal Equine Gold thats very good for settling the tummy and putting on weight.

I used to have a horse who didn't do so welll in the winter. He also didn't really like eating large ammounts and would just leave feed uneaten in his manger. I used build up, but they changed the recipie a while ago and it didn't work as well on my last horse. Also used bluechip which was really good, but expensive. I also tried a supplement called Flourish. I can't remember who made it, but it contained probiotics and looked herby and it was really good, especially as it was just a small scoop added to his feed so it didn't make for big meals.

i'd have him blood tested. if a horse is getting lots of food and eating it all and not putting weight on, then there must be a reason for it.
i'd change him from haylage to hay, personally, because the acidity of haylage doesn't suit all horses.
bailey's No1 cooked cereal meal is very palatable, easily digestible, and great for putting weight on.

i swear by allen and page weight gain and calm and condition, great for weight gain and no fizz. Also Top spec balancer is great as is D&H ultimate balancer and blue chip. good luck
