Hi, okay basically I have a welsh D mare who is usually rather fizzy and excitable, but its getting rather extreme now. Shes had everything checked, so think shes either having her teenage phase (6/7) or she might have too much energy.
I cant canter her out on hacks now as she just takes off as soon as I let her go, which is obviously not safe. Shes also rather hairy in the school, and pulls all the time in canter. (Not really after advice how to deal with that, I have a v. good instructor and we seem to be making progress plus loads of internet opinions usually end up with me confused) Then when I ask her to slow down with my seat she ignores me, and if I use my hands she either stops, rears and spins sort of thing, or starts bucking. Theres nothing physically wrong with her.
The main thing is, we had some different problems over the spring/summer, and after investigating, Spillers Feeds said I wasnt giving her enough feed (only a handful of chaff), and with poor grass she just didnt have the energy to do the work I was asking her to do. [Solid hour or 2 hacking or schooling/jumping every day with shows at the weekends] So we started feeding her half a scoop of slow release energy nuts which seemed to solve that problem. Now shes still exercised 6 times a week, but 2 lunging sessions, 2 30 minuteish schooling sessions and 2 hacks at weekends of about an hour.
My main concern about feeding her less is that another thing she did when she wasnt getting enough feed was being quite nappy out on hacks (and mainly stopping, and she NEVER stops) which shes doing now too..
I had all my confidence in myself spoilt by some lovely person who had a massive go at me, and I feel so inadequate. Now I cant help but feel I just cant ride well enough..-sighs- Its not her fault, I just cant blimming ride. Still, shes my equine soul mate and Im not giving up on her (other than this xD). By the way shes 7 in Mayish, and Im turning her away for 2 months whilst I do my GCSEs after Easter (not turning her away now on advice of instructor).
At the moment shes being fed, twice a day, a big handful of chaff, third of a scoop of slow release energy nuts and a third of a scoop of calm and condition plus vitamins, oil and garlic. Do you think it might be giving her enough energy? Any ideas of how to reduce it but not so that we end up with the other problems as before?
