Posting in here so more people see it.
I have had so much conflicting advice lately I want to tear my face off.
I have a Welsh Cob who has had laminitis once in the past (not grass/weight/feed related but still) so obviously I am very careful with him. He is fed Hi Fi Lite and Formula 4 Feet in the recommended amounts and he looks good. However I have now read several stories of these not being good for them. He is also lame (not lami related) and out of work and I'm starting to panic about the spring grass. Can someone explain to me about forage analysis etc?
I also have a connie cross who is quite fine, she is currently on Readigrass, Speedibeet and Formula 4 Feet. I have been totally put off the Formula 4 Feet. Can knowledgable people please tell me the pros and cons and what you would feed etc. I want to go back to as simple as possible, I don't understand these balancers etc, what are they balancing, it doesn't make any sense to me.
They were both getting ad-lib hay but I've started to cut the cob's down since his lameness, connie gets some haylage as well. But we change hay suppliers next month for the summer, then they change onto the summer fields etc.
To sum up, what to feed laminitis-prone, out of work cob coming into the Spring and what to feed fairly good do-ing connie cross in medium work (schooled/jumped quite hard at least 5 times a week).
My mind is frazzled, I didn't realize feeding could be such a nightmare. Please feel free to write essays, I really need some educated advice.
