Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me....?

I have a 15.3 ID x TB (quite fine) he is currently living out barefoot and is extremely low maintenance, he looks well for being on just grass for now.

I am moving yards in 2 weeks where he will be stabled at night so he will obviously be given hay over night. When I had him in last winter he was given a very small handful of mix provided by my current yard, merely to keep him quiet while the other horses ate as he holds his weight so well he doesn't need it weight wise and is only ridden a couple of times a week as the weather gets worse.

Soooo... I am not really sure what I should be feeding him when I move as I will be buying my own food. I am looking for a very basic mix that is non heating, obviously I will add to this as necessary but initially don't need anything too fancy.

Thanks

If he doesnt really need any hard feed, I would be looking at a balancer. Possibly with a little sugar beet and chaff

As he's barefoot I would play it safe sugar/starch wise to be on the safe side.
Fast fibre with equimins advance complete supplement for vits/mins.

Brill, thank you I will look at these. Does anyone have experience of the Baileys horse feeds, they seem to do a general horse mix for light work?

I am interested in this thread as I get confused over whether to hard feed or not.

I am not at the moment, he is big, muzzled and in light work, living out, but some people say dont feed he doesnt need it then others say he needs something for proteins and minerals etc.....lots of horses live happily and healthily off of grass & he isnt brought in at night now which is why I used to feed him a token feed to stop him kicking when others fed.

I am the same, although I've had horses for a long time they have always been stables at the same yard with a very experienced yard owner, we are all quite close and so I've always taken her advice. I am now moving about an hour and a half away and not quite sure I trust my own judgement, hence the posting on here. I'm not sure she would appreciate a call at half 6 asking if my hay net is too heavy :)
