I'm after some advice. My horse, who ties up, is on a carefully maintained diet, so that I know exactly what he is being fed. He is kept on DIY at a large livery yard, where we are are very happy except for one thing. The person who is employed to do the yard maintenance always has sweets in his pockets and keeps giving them to my horse. This annoys me for various reasons. 1). He is the sort who will very quickly start nipping, and now whenever anyone walks past his door is asking for treats. 2). As I said he is on a carefully maintained diet and I want to know exactly what he is eating. 3). He competes FEI and again I need to know what he has been fed.

I have asked this chap nicely not to do it and explained why, but he still persists. Has anyone got any suggestions on how I make him stop.

ask the YO to have a word?

the livery in the stable next to me is always giving my 4yro polos and it does annoy me a bit. She is very nice but I just don't like horses getting treats unless they go in their feed bowls.

I did think of that but really wanted to avoid "telling tales", which is the way that will be taken. But I think it may be the only answer.

If it were just polos I wouldn't be too concerned, but it is all sorts of sweets, whatever he has bought that day.

You should make a laminated sign, pretending it to be for some other reason for example

Print off a list of all your emergency contact details
Vet
Farrier
Owner

Then underneath write

PLEASE DO NOT FEED ME, I AM ON A CONTROLLED INTAKE OF FOOD DUE TO MEDICAL REASONS

laminate it and stick to the stable door. If anyone asks what you are doing say your vet has advised you monitor his food intake and that you thought it would be a good idea to put emergency details on his door at the same time!!!

:D :D

If this is who I think it is, I'd suggest putting zack in your stable and painting him orange! Nothing like having your face chewed off to make you back off a bit... ;):D

Seriously, though, think you may have to talk to E & L. Can't really think of anything (bar a nasty shock!) that will make P stop... can't believe he'd be so irresponsible after all the trouble you've had with B tying up, though!

This is J with B, btw (if you need more clues PM me!) Oooh, HHO is a small place, and I've only been here 5 mins...

Id do this plus speak to YO.

This can be such a pain. I've had this on a number of yards - not a problem on our current yard as titbits are frowned on by our trainer. I find myself having to sneak carrots into her manger!
But seriously - if it is members of the public (as it was when our horse was a livery at an RS) put a big sign up saying no titbits, on restricted diet.
If its other liveries, have a serious word - I always know when my mare is being fed as she gets very nippy, and a word in the right ear soon stops it!

Thanks for the suggestions. I am pretty sure a sign won't apply to the person in question !!!! I will have another word tonight, and if it doesn't stop then get the YO to speak to him.
